RE: 17, I live in florida and want to runaway live with grand mother Your Message
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to us for help. It sounds like your situation at home is really tense. You said that living with your mom and her boyfriend is unbearable. That must be really difficult. It’s great that you contacted us to research some options before you left to live with your grandmother. That is really smart of you.
We are not legal experts, but we can help give you a general idea of how these things usually go. If you leave your home without permission, you might be reported as a runaway. This means that you might be found by the police and forced to go back home to your mom, but you probably won’t get charged with a crime just because you ran away. Crossing state lines comes with added risks. You said that you don’t want your grandmother to get into trouble. In most states, it is a crime to “harbor a runaway.” This means that if your grandmother fails to report to police or your mom that you are with her, or if she tries to obstruct a police investigation into your whereabouts, she might be charged with a crime. Law enforcement can react in a lot of different ways to a runaway report, depending on the situation. You can always call your local police non-emergency number to ask them how they usually respond to a runaway report for a seventeen year old.
It sounds like you are set on going to live with your grandmother. Have you thought about how you will get there, how you will survive along the way, and what to do if you get stranded somewhere? You might also want to think about how you will get enrolled in school so that you can finish in 2014, and what important things you will need to take with you. It might be difficult for you to enroll in school without your mom’s permission before you turn 18.
There are a lot of things to consider before you leave. It was really smart of you to contact us so that we can help you find out what you need to know. It might be easier for us to help you figure out what your next steps should be over the phone or through our live chat service. Our 24/7 confidential hotline number is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). You can chat with us between the hours of 4:30pm and 11:30pm Central Standard time through our website, www.1800RUNAWAY.org. We are here to listen and support you in any way that we can. Once we learn a little more about our situation, we can help you figure out what options and resources will be best for your needs. It sounds like you are having a really rough time at home, and we are looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Best of luck,
NRS
