  • 17 and depressed

Hey I'm 17. From the state of Virginia. And i been going through a lot way to much to type. I been trying to seek help but it seems noone wants to help me. Or say .Things will get better. But they haven't. My dad isn.t a great guy . I've never got to go anywhere i been always locked in my house. He always yells when he doesn't get his way and sometimes even gets violence but its more of verbal abuse them physical. I recently got a job and my dad made me quit it cause if said we had no gas money but we he spent all the money i gave him on other things he just doesn't want me to be independent. He doesn't even want me to go and baby sit my brothers kids. Well anyway there is a whole lot more. And i use to be strong but now i have no more fight left in me. Sometimes i just want to take some pills and die. I'm going to deep depression like i use to be and I'm tired of it . I don't want to feel this way anymore. And well I'm just at the point now i want to runaway and i will write a note or a letter hto my parents saying my reasons. I was just wandering since my friend wants to help me out and wants to bring me to Canada? Could that be possible? They have all the money and everything . If i get down there could i stay down there until I'm 18 and then come back? I just really have to finally get away from these people before i do something crazy or just go into that horrible state of depression again. I want to just be happy. Help me please.

    re: 17 and depressed

Hi and thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you are going through a lot of tough things right now and we hope that we can help you. It sounds like you are really trying to take care of yourself and be independent and it must be hard to not feel like that is supported. You shared that you have feelings of depression and wanting to die. There are certainly people out there to help you. If you are feeling suicidal or like you want to hurt yourself, you can always call 911 or the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.

You mentioned that things get violent with your dad and we want you to know that you do have an option of reporting that to the Department of Children and Family Services. You can call the abuse reporting hotline at 804-786-8536 or you can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY 24 hours a day and we can call with you.

It’s understandable that you might feel like running away is the only option. You asked about going to Canada as a way to get away. While it’s great that you have a friend that wants to help you, it would probably be very difficult to cross an international boarder as a minor. While we are not legal experts, we can tell you that you would likely need a passport as well as notarized documentation with guardianship permission to leave the nation. Sometimes things can change at home to make it feel more comfortable or safe to stay. You are always welcome to call us or to chat with us from 4:30-11:30pm CST to discuss other options available to you. Take care,

    -NRS

      thank you

Thank you. And the only thing that they will do is come to my house and talk to my dad and try to mend the situation but that will not help cause if feels he has done nothing wrong. He just doesn't care. But i use to feel suicidal but i don't feel suicidal now as much just very sad. But even if i already have a passport will it still be hard to get to Canada? But yeah I'm just trying to find something out there to help me.

Thanks for following up. If you are considering going into Canada, you might find this resource to be helpful: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca...8_voy-can.aspx. If you look through the website it describes parameters around minors traveling into Canada. If there is anything else we can do, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY.

        Best,
