  • can I move out with my baby's dad?

I am 17 1/2 years old and have a 7 week old baby with my boyfriend of 3 years. My parents are extremely harsh to my boyfriend and plan on banning him from seeing our child. I can't handle them anymore and want to move in with my 21 year old boyfriend and his family. Could my parents call the cops on my boyfriend if I move in with him? Could either of us get in trouble by the law if I do move in with him?

Can I move out with my baby's dad?

    Hi,
Thanks for posting on the NRS bulletin board.
It sounds like there has been quite a problem with your parents getting along with your boyfriend and father of your baby.
We are sorry that you are going through this situation.
It must make it very difficult for you.

Most states put the age of majority at 18 yrs of age so at 17 you might still be considered a minor.
By leaving home without parental consent your parents may be able to file a runaway report on you.
Now in regards to your boyfriend facing legal action unfortunately we are not legal experts so we cannot say what if any legal action he might face.

To find out specific information about the legal age status you can call the non-emergency number of your local police department.
You may also contact our 1-800-Runaway (786-2929) 24hr crisis line to learn about more possible options.
Your boyfriend can also look into legal advice from a family lawyer about his parental rights.

We understand how frustrated you must feel about all of this and we hope that you can find a way to compromise with your parents on a suitable arrangement.
Thank you again for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.
    Take Care
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

        Hello,

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. We’re very sorry you’re going through a rough time at home that’s making you want to runaway but our hotline, services, and referrals are for individuals in the United States. Every city and state within the United States has a different way of dealing with running away therefore the same would apply for countries. India has different laws than the United States does on running away. Please refer to any services available in India.

        Best of luck,

        NRS Supervisor
