Things have gotten bad here. I'm in Florida, and I have a long lasting relationship with a boy that is just one month shy of a year.

Today, we were busted for doing things we shouldn't have [what it is is unimportant] and I believe his parents are going to try and separate us for good. His parents are emotionally abusive to him, and his father is a cannabis smoker and dealer. We're horribly in love, and separation is just not an option for us.

I need to know in Florida, how hard will they search for children reported missing/runaways? Will they begin searching out of state? I'm thinking of calling my grandfather from Pennsylvania to come get us, with the words "it's this, or we live broke and on the streets." .

I'm not close to my grandparents, but I know they care. My mom and dad wouldn't even suspect I went to them, let alone my boyfriends parents. If we went to Pennsylvania for a few months [until my boyfriends mom decides to change her mind about us] and lived relatively normal lives [going out to convenience stores, in public, but not in school/jobs] is there any way police in Pennsylvania could recognize us as the missing children from Florida? Are Runaway reports that widespread? And if we stayed in the same state [which I doubt], how hard and long will the authorities look for us?

Hi and thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like your boyfriend is living in a situation that you feel is unsafe and that the two of you want to leave and be together. It can be difficult to continue living in a home that is emotionally abusive and no one has the right to treat your boyfriend that way. Has he talked with anyone else about what is going on with his parents? Sometimes reaching out to another trusted adult can be helpful in sorting through other options.

You have some really great questions about runaway reports. Because we are not legal experts, we can’t guarantee exactly what will happen, but we can address your concerns in a more general way. In most places, when a runaway report is filed it is entered into a national police database and assigned a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) case number. What that means is that if you are picked up by the police, you will be known as a runaway and returned to your guardians. Additionally, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) also takes reports on runaway youth and spans state borders. What would be a way we could escape to a different state then; without being instantly picked up when one cop sees us? I just want to be able to escape to a different state and live a life that isn't never-leaving-the-house.. His parents refuse to get him any kind of help or be persuaded with their choice. We have no other option.

Well then what I'm asking is this; if we run to a very far state and go out in public with only slightly altered appearances [ie haircut, new scars, clothes, etc] but give no personal info, are we likely to be visually recognized by authorities? If you can't answer that professionally, then what is your opinion on the likelihood of us being recognized and taken into custody?

If you do not give the police your correct information, it may be difficult for them to determine if you are actually a runaway.
