I'm 17 and from Ohio, I am planning on going to a concert with a friend and its 3 hours away. My parents have told me that I do not have permission to go. They have been extremely over protective throughout my whole life and I feel I have no social life. This is a safe situation, they know the people I am going with, etc. Can they call the cops on me if I go without their permission? If they do, what will happen? The kid I'm going with is a good guy and I don't want him to get into trouble, and I don't want to get into trouble either! I am a straight A student and a good kid.

Re: Going somewhere without parents permission at 17?
Thanks so much for reaching out with your questions. It sounds like you are in a tough spot right now and unsure how to proceed. You mentioned that your parents are pretty strict and you are planning on going to a concert with a friend but your parents are not giving you permission. It sounds like the main concern right now is what your parents could do if you left. Obviously you know your parents best and would know how they would react to this situation. If you did decide to leave do you think you would leave a note or let your parents know where you are? At 17, in most states, a youth is still considered a minor. So it is a possibility that your parents may decide to make a runaway report. Keep in mind that running away is not considered a crime, it’s usually a status offense. If your parents did decide to make a report the only thing that would most likely happen is maybe the police come pick you up and take you home. It’s also a possibility that because you are 17 and you are not really running away they may not take the report. One option may be to contact your local police and just ask some general questions.
