  • Not Reporting A Runaway

I was recently contacted by a child I know telling me that he ran away from his foster family. This happened a week ago, but there is no report for a missing child in the missing child database. I believe his foster family may not have reported this. Is it illegal? How can I help this child without getting into trouble myself? Please help!

    re: Not Reporting A Runaway

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you are trying to help this child without getting into any legal trouble. We are happy that you are seeking out assistance. If the youth ran away from a foster home, it would be up to that family or Child Protective Services to report the child to the police as a runaway. Have you contacted the police and provided them with the child’s information to make sure he wasn’t listed as a runaway? If the youth is not listed as a runaway, it may be difficult to get into any legal trouble for harboring or abiding a runaway if he isn’t a reported runaway.

We hope that information helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). Our hotline is confidential, anonymous, toll-free, and available 24/7.

    Best Wishes
