(If you feel you are in immediate danger for any reason, please call the police or go to your local emergency room.)
Hi there,
Thanks so much for reaching out to us. To answer your question, a parent/guardian is typically needed for school registration. If you were to go to your boyfriend’s, whoever has legal custody of you would have to enroll in your chosen school on your behalf.
However, you do have the right to enroll in a public school under the McKinney-Vento Act, so some states might have different rules about things like this. While most schools you enroll in will likely report you as a runaway when they find out, it might be worth reaching out to your state’s coordinator to ask your enrollment questions directly (without giving away any personal information.) You can find this information here: https://schoolhouseconnection.org/ho...ons-directory/
Since you might be thinking about leaving home for reasons involving your parents/guardians, this might not be possible for you. Unfortunately in situations like these you have to decide between staying in your school or leaving home.
The decision to leave home is a very difficult and personal decision and we support you mo matter what you choose, but we’d love to help talk you through everything so you can make the best decision possible for you. The NRS is here 24/7 via online chat or by calling 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929).
Thanks again and good luck!

Hi, thank you for reaching out. It sounds like you are planning on running away this summer and not going back home and wondering how you would still go to school. There is a Federal Law called McKinney Vento Act that allows runaway and homeless youth be able to enroll in school. A resource to help with that is: National Center for Homeless Education Helpline at (800) 308 2145. If you would like to talk more about what’s going on that is making you want to run away or anything else we can do to support, please either call our hotline 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or chat us online at 1800runaway.org. We hope to hear from you soon.
Be safe,
NRS

Hi thank you for reaching out. It sounds like you are wondering what could happen if you go to school as a runaway. School is generally the place where police can find you and bring your parents into the situation to have you brought back home with them. It can help if there is an investigation open into either abuse or neglect. It could be an option to get a case worker involved so that all parties can work together to figure out a solution for your safety. To talk more about this, please either call our hotline 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or chat us online at 1800runaway.org. We hope to hear from you soon.
Be safe,

Hi there,
Thank you for writing to us here at National Runaway Safeline (NRS). We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. It sounds like you’re quite overwhelmed by things at home right now and you mentioned being harmed. We’re sorry you’re going through this. You don't deserve to be hurt in any way. If you are at risk of any danger or feeling unsafe, we encourage you to reach out to 911 or seek emergency assistance immediately. You may also be able to report any mistreatment to CPS. Child Help USA 1-800-422-4453 www.childhelp.org is an organization that helps protect minors from being harmed. They can tell you more about how CPS could respond to your situation. If you ever need assistance calling out to CPS to make an abuse or neglect report please call is at 1-800-RUNAWAY.
It seems you want to know some information about enrolling in school as a runaway. While we are not experts on the law, 18 is generally the age that an individual may leave home without parent permission. If you are under 18 and leave home, your parent/guardian may file you as a runaway and you may be returned home. Also, those you stay with may run the risk of being charged with harboring a runaway. For more specifics on the law, the local non-emergency police or legal aid may better answer legal questions. If you would like to talk more in detail please chat soon through our website www.1800runaway.org (click on the chat button) if you are unable to call in. We unfortunately cannot give advice as we are non-directive. You know your situation best
We hope to hear from you soon.
