    u sure can!

I live in michigan, Montcalm county to be exact, and moved out when I was 17. My dad was being a real a** one day so I told him I was leaving. He told me if I did he would call the cops. So later that day I was talking to a friend telling her about it, she told me I could legally leave with out any consequence since I was 17. After that I called police to ask b4 I did anything they told me I could leave and move out if I wanted to without my patents being able to do anything about it, but until I was 18 my parents where still legally responsible for me. Which basically meant if I got in trouble or anything like that they would still be called to handle it. Long story short, I left, my dad called the cops and was told there was nothing they could do but that he was still legally responsible for me.. ooh boy was he mad! Lol. So yes, yes u sure can! Just make this what u absolutely want..

      RE: U sure can!

      Hello,

Thank you for writing into the National Runaway bulletin board. From what you have told us, it sounds like you were in a very similar situation. Thank you for the useful advice that you are sharing with fellow posters. It sounds like you had done a lot of research before leaving your dad’s house.

Unfortunately, here at the NRS we cannot tell you in definite terms on what would happen for someone to leave home at the age of 17 years old without parents consent. Laws on that specific subject vary from state to state, so our advice would be call your local non-emergency police number to get more information on that. Just as you suggested and also followed through on getting into contact with them. But like we stated earlier, states do vary, as well as the way that each individual police district in Michigan might handle that situation.

Once again thank you for writing in with your helpful advice this particular post. We appreciate that you wanted to reach out and share your experience with us and with other posters on here. If you do have any additional questions you can also call into our 24hour hotline (1.800.RUNAWAY) for a more immediate response, as well as connect you to some resources that we might have on hand. Or another service that we offer here at the NRS is our chat room which is offered from 4:30pm to 11:30pm/CST (www.1800RUNAWAY.org). If you feel more comfortable with that opinion we are more than welcome to contact us through that.

      Best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

        Please help.

I'm really tired of my home life, I don't have much freedom, I'm tied down by my parents' rules. Also I struggle with depression when I'm at home; it's a lot better when I'm around people I get along with and enjoy being around. I haven't gotten in trouble at all legally and have no intentions on doing so.
A friend of mine who is over 18 wants to help me have a better life. I'm going into 11th grade this fall and will turn 17 in January. I have thought and decided that I will finish my 11th grade year in school and when I get out for the summer, move in with my friend, in Michigan. I will try to find a job and finish my high school carrier with online classes. I would be keeping in touch with some family members if this happens. Is all of this possible without my parents' consent? What would happen if I do it without them agreeing?

          RE: Please help

          Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us for help. It sounds like you are having a tough time at home and you have made plans to leave before you turn 18, but after you finish up this next school year. You sound like a pretty responsible person and like you have plans for getting a job and finishing up school after you run away. It was really smart for you to reach out to us and do your research before leaving home. You should know that if you run away before you turn 18, your parents can report you as a runaway, which means that the police can pick you up and make you go home. Running away is not a crime, but harboring a runaway can result in criminal charges, so if you go stay with your friend, they will be taking a risk that they could get into trouble. You might also find it difficult to enroll in school without your parent's permission. If you have more questions about this, or you want to talk to someone about your plans, you can always reach us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or chat with us online any day between 4:30pm and 11:30pm CST. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon, and wish you the best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

Michigan Laws on 17 year olds leaving home

My question is a little different because it is for my son who just turned 17 and is currently living with his father. He lived with me up until he turned 12 which was the legal age in Florida for him to decide where he wanted to live. His dad went behind my back and bribed him with several different things (which he never stuck to) buy anyway he took our son to a therapist behind my back and had him tell the therapist he wanted to live with his dad. long story short we went to court the judge granted a man with a criminal back ground, current DUI, no Driver license, and no vehicle because my son told a therapist he wanted to live with his father. After he got custody He applied for child support which I have no problem paying and I do. I just thought it was funny because he never paid a dime. Next he started monitoring our phone calls and denying my visits or making him choose between seeing me or going to Disney or some other function which his dad never came through. I was starting to get suspicious I knew something was wrong so of course I tried asking him but he denied any wrong doings. His dad was listening and yelling at her to hang up the phone. After a few months of the same behavior I reported it but when he (my son) was questioned he denied it and I was cut off from him completely for several months. I was at a complete loss and didn't know what to do because my son would not open up and I didn't know why but I knew something was wrong. He was shutting down and everything was changing his father was trying to make me believe he just didn't want to see or talk to me but I didn't buy it. Last year I started to panic when I went almost 3 months not knowing where he was and all phone numbers disconnected yet again, so I called the sheriffs department and had them check the last known address I had for my sons father to make sure my son was ok. Only to find out it was vacant and the officer said it looked like they left in a hurry. After a amber alert was in the process of being filed my son called me from a block number which I was told he was not allowed to give me her number or address but they had moved to Michigan (without my permission of course). I recently found out his dad was in jail for drug (meth) use and over the years there has also been mental and some physical abuse (mainly with the step parent but his dad always seems to take her side) going on in their house. He has been almost like a prisoner, he is not allowed to get a job, go with friends, he stays in his room unless he is doing his 101 chores, they put him down and call him names and tell him god it not real which he now believes because he says if there was a god he would not of went through what he has had to go through, they have not allowed him to participate in sports but allow the other kids to play whatever, they would not let him call me when he asked but instead told him if I loved him I would call him, he had a phone but when they found out he was calling me while they were not around they took it away and told him he was never getting it back, he was also told he can not get his drivers license until he was 18 (btw he used to honor roll student but grades are very poor), When he was able to call me I recorded our conversations on my phone and I reported the abuse he told me about and once again when he was questioned he got scared and lied. The worst part was once his dad found out it only made things worse for him. I really don't know what to do I am at a lost and I feel my hands are tied. He has a fake social media that he is currently texting me on and continues to tell me things as well as counting down the days till he can leave Michigan to come home. I want to go get him now but I don't want to risk getting him in more trouble if they would pick him back up and make him return back to his father since he is not 18. What are the laws with leaving home at 17 in Michigan?

re: Michigan Laws on 17 year olds leaving home

              Hi

Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. We are sorry to hear about horrible treatment your son has and is suffering through. It sounds like your son is currently residing in Michigan and you would like to know if he could legally move out at 17. Michigan is an odd state because the law regarding moving out at 17 varies throughout the state (generally by county). In order to determine if your son can legally leave at 17, you may have to figure out which city and/or county he is currently residing in. After obtaining that information, you may be able to contact that the nonemergency police hotline for that area to determine if he can do so.

We hope the information provided helps. Remember if you have any additional questions or concerns, we can be reached on our 24/7 hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). Our hotline is confidential and anonymous. Also our live chat is available between 4:30pm and 11:30pm CST.

              Best Wishes

                Moving Out without parents permission

I am tired of my home. My parents try to find things to punish me for and always giving me extra chores when I don't even do anything. They also treat me so differently than my little sister and little brother. I am four years older than them both, but that doesn't mean they have to treat me differently than them or anyone else for that matter. I am 16 right now, but I will be 17 soon. I want to move out, I have a place in mind, but I don't know if I am can without parents permission. Do I need permission? I have done a lot of research and most of the websites say I can move out without permission at 17, some say 16, and some say 18. Which is the legal age without emancipation?

RE: Moving Out without parents permission

                  Hello,

Thank you taking the time to reach out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. We are always here to help and here to listen. From what you have told us about your situation it sounds like you’re going there a very difficult time right now. Sounds pretty unfair for your parent to treat you differently than your other siblings, what exactly does that mean for you when you say that they are doing that to you?

Unfortunately, since we aren’t total legal experts we cannot tell you in definite terms on what would happen for someone at the age of 16 going on 17 years old to leave the house without getting their parents’ permission. Laws on that specific subject vary from state to state, so our advice would be call your local non-emergency police number to get more information on that. What typically happens though if you are still considered a minor; your parents are able to make a runaway report in the event that you do leave, but since it’s only considered a statues offense the only thing that would happen is that the police will pick you up and bring you back home. Again this does depend on your specific state laws and police policy. It sounds like you have given a lot of thought in to what you want to do in your situation though. If you were to run away, what kinds of things do you think that your parents would do? What is your overall plan if you do choose to leave (i.e. housing, transportation, financial stability, school options etc)?

Once again thank you for writing into the NRS, we are always here to listen and here to help you with everything we can. You can also call into our 24hour hotline (1.800.RUNAWAY) for a more immediate response, as well as connect you to some resources that we might have. Another service that we offer here at the NRS is our chat room which is offered from 4:30pm to 11:30pm/CST (www.1800RUNAWAY.org). If you feel more comfortable with that opinion we are more than welcome to contact us through there.

Good luck and hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you so much for your information. I have been doing some research on the internet, however I will search for the non-emergency number for their local sheriffs department.

                            need advice

I'm 16 about to be 17 in a month an my home is unbearable at this point my parents are no longer doing their job they feed me but that's it. I have no power an it's been that way for a little bit. Bills are piled up an now we could loose our home. I need to get out but I only have one of my parents permission. Is one parents permission enough? I have a place to go where I'm welcome an a place to finish school but I want to make sure that I won't getin to any trouble or get anyone else who helps me in trouble. This is in Michigan.

                                I need some advice...

I am 16 years old and am going to be 17 in about a month. I am tired of being the live in nanny in my house. I clean, babysit, occasionally cook, and everything else I am responsible for in my house, while my siblings do nothing. We just moved back to Michigan and we are about to move to Kentucky. I don't want to move because I am a Junior in high school and I would like to graduate from the school I am currently attending. I have a place to go whether it be a family friend or family members that have noticed how my mother treats me and favors the other two kids. They make up ridiculous rules that I have to follow but they let my siblings do it. I am an independent person. I really have to be due to my situation. I would like to know if I can legally move out when I am 17.
