  • 15 in Ohio-- what can happen if..?

My parents and I have been fighting nonstop since I started dating a 19 year old. I've known him for a long time and hes my best friends brother. They obviously dont want me with him but theyre tring to take everyone AND everything away from me. Including my best friend. I want to leave my house just for a week or two and try and let things calm down. Chances are I'd be staying with my boyfriend and his sister and their grandfather. I want to know if they can get in any sort of legal trouble if I stay there willingly and only temporarily to clear my head WITHOUT parental consent (in Ohio).

    Hey,
Thanks for reaching out to us. Sounds like things got difficult as soon as your family found out that you were dating this person. When you asked them what was wrong with dating this person, what did your parents say? If they didn’t say, what do you think their problem could be?

It’s good to hear that you have people you can trust and rely on. Sometimes it’s difficult to get through things on our own so having folks there to support us is important. And in your case it sounds like it’s your friend and boyfriend.

The trouble with that is that you’re 15 and your boyfriend is 19. In some states, with such an age gap, if you are found with anyone who is 18 or over, they can get into legal trouble. Because it sounds like your parents would file you as a runaway with the police. Do your parents know where your friend’s grandfather lives? If not, well maybe they can’t find you but it sounds like leaving home would make things more challenging than cool them off.

Do you feel like you can accomplish what you want without running away? Is there somewhere you could go WITH permission? A friend? Family member? Because if you’re just looking to cool off, that can probably be done with other folks and then you wouldn’t have to worry about getting people in trouble.

We’re here for you. Things sound tough but you’re not alone. If you’d like to explore your options some more please call us. We’re anonymous, confidential and available 24/7. Call us at 1800 RUNAWAY (786-2929) anytime.
