  • can i leave at age 17 in illinois?

Im 17 years old and my mom has issues with me going to college. She says that i need to put god before everything else. Everyday i come home to deal with her screaming and nagging about having faith in god, but he isnt gnna pay my bills. 2 weeks ago she got physical and threw her plate at me becuase i asked for my social security number. She said if i wanted to i could leave. I live in illinois and i want to know if its legal for me to leave if she said i could. If im 17 and i leave home will the cops have the authority to bring me home if my mom reports it?

2nd post:I think she would report me after i leave. She always makes herself look like the victim. She has always said i can leave but im scared of leaving and getting the person im leaving with in trouble. I have a very safe place to be at if i do leave and i would be fine money wise. I just want to make sure that if i do leave she wont be able to bring me back thats why i want to have a plan b just incase.

Re: Can i leave at age 17 in Illinois?

    Hi,
It sounds like things have been getting stressful and somewhat unsafe feeling for you at home right now, we're sorry that you're having to go through this all. It can be really hard to come home to a place where you're always getting yelled at, especially about something that you don't feel is your own priority.
So as far as we can say (we are not legal experts) one would have to be 18 to legally leave home in Illiniois. But it is different depending on where you are what the consequences are of leaving home. If she doesn't file a runaway report then it doesn't sound like you'd have much to be picked up for. Do you think she would tell you that you can go and then do that? You can always call the local police to ask them any questions you have about what they would do if your mom filed a report, if you got picked up, etc... Again, we aren't legal experts so that really would be the best way to find out what happens in your area.
If you do leave, do you have a safe place to go? We are here to help you in any way that we can. If you can give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY, we are anonymous, confidential, and 24/7. We would like to help you figure out the answers to your questions and help you come up with a safe plan that you feel comfortable with. Can I leave at 17 in Illinois?

      Hi,

      Thanks for posting again.
It seems like you have plans to be in a safe place but you’re worried about your mom making it difficult for your friend. Is that correct?

It must be very confusing to have your mom say one moment you can go only to change her mind. It seems like you are going through a lot emotionally. We hope you have a way to level out the amount of stress this situation may have caused you.
You are right to be concerned about your friend or anyone helping you.

It's always a good idea to have an understanding of the law as it pertains to you and others.
You said you would like to come up with a plan B.

That sounds like a good idea.
We stated in our last reply that you are welcome to contact our 1-800-Runaway (786-2929) 24hr crisis line to discuss what's on your mind about a plan or to look at possibly some other options.
      How does that sound?

Thank you again for posting and we hope your situation gets better for you.

      Take Care,
      NRS
