Hi there,
Thank you for writing to us here at National Runaway Safeline (NRS). We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. It seems there is a lot that you are faced with right now and you’re feeling like leaving is one of your only options. It seems you want to know some information on runaway laws.
While we are not experts on the law, 18 is generally the age that an individual may leave home without parent permission. If you are under 18 and leave home, your parent/guardian may file you as a runaway and you may be returned home. Also, those you stay with may run the risk of being charged with harboring a runaway. For more specifics on the law, the local non-emergency police or legal aid may better answer legal questions.
We are here as support to help through this challenging time. We can best help by phone or chat as NRS is unable to respond more than twice by email to assist you. If you would like to talk more in detail please call or chat soon.
Our contact information is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929); www.1800runaway.org (click on the chat button).
If you are at risk of any danger or feeling unsafe, we encourage you to reach out to 911 or seek emergency assistance immediately.
Be safe,
NRS

I’m 16, pregnant, a runaway, and I’m missing. I ran away from a group home (foster care) to a family that cares about me. My mother who still has rights knows that I ran away and is willing to sign custody over to the family however that may not be within the 9 months for when I give birth. Im only a few weeks along and I don’t know what to do because I don’t want to get caught and go back into foster care. Is there any way I can receive help without getting caught by the cops or getting in trouble with the law ?!

Hi there and thank you for taking the time to write us here at NRS.
We appreciate you sharing a bit about your situation, and reaching out for help was a great first step to get any support you may need. While we are not legal experts and cannot speak to the specifics of your situation, you do have a right to access proper medical care. Medical care that you can consent to as a minor without a legal guardian can vary state by state. You can find out more information and speak to someone about your options at Planned Parenthood. You can go to www.plannedparenthood.org or call (800) 230-7526 to find a clinic in your area and receive care. Planned Parenthood is able to offer services for free or low cost in most cases.
We are here 24/7 to listen and help. If you have more questions or you would like to talk more in depth about your situation and options, please do not hesitate to reach out again. You can contact us directly for immediate support at 1-800-786-2929 or through live chat at 1800runaway.org.
Stay safe,
NRS

Thanks for reaching out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline and sharing your experience with us. It is a courageous step to take that is not always easy. It sounds like you are in a difficult situation. Becoming pregnant and feeling unprepared or unsure of what to do next can be a scary thing to face. We are always here to listen and help as best as possible. Taking this step by step can help to make this stressful time a little less overwhelming. Identifying people in your life that you can trust to support you during this time may be a good start to seeking help and exploring your options.
If you suspect that you may be pregnant or are currently unsure, confirming pregnancy is a good first step. This can look like purchasing a pregnancy test after you have missed a menstrual period or you can get this confirmation by possibly going to a local clinic for a blood test.
If you are pregnant, proper health care can be important in whatever you choose to do. One way to reach a doctor and find useful resources that specialize in women’s health/pregnancy is to contact Planned Parenthood at 1800-230-7526 or go to their website at https://www.plannedparenthood.org/.
If you’d like additional support or resources please call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY 24 hours, 7 days a week or chat with us online by going to www.1800RUNAWAY.org.

Hi there,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us here at NRS. We understand that reaching out for help takes a lot of courage and this is a great first step to getting any support you may need. Information that you share with a doctor is usually confidential although this could vary by state and type of clinic. Planned Parenthood can offer low cost or even free services that are confidential. They can also give you more information about your options and how you might be able to receive services without parental consent. You can go to the Planned Parenthood website, https://www.plannedparenthood.org/pl...-greater-texas , to learn more or call 1-800-230-PLAN..
We hope this information helps and can be a good start. If you want to talk more about your situation or you need any other resources, please do not hesitate to reach out again. We are available 24/7 for immediate support by phone at 1-800-786-2929 or through live chat at 1800runaway.org.
Stay safe,
NRS

Hi, we're glad you're reaching out for help. You don't have to experience this on your own. It sounds like you weren't given any control or freedom in DCF custody and they weren't letting you make the decisions that were right for you. It sounds like you have a healthy mentality and haven't been supported in the way you need.
Regarding getting medical support for your pregnancy, there are a few options. Planned Parenthood may have a location in your area, and be able to offer you a discrete check up. Their website is www.plannedparenthood.org. You can also call them at 1-800-230-PLAN to speak to the location nearest you.
Based on your location we may be able to locate other local agencies that could provide you with the support you need. Emancipation can be a possibility if you have a job and feel comfortable supporting yourself, but can be a process that sometimes takes a few months to complete, and the specifics can very based on your state. To explore either of those possibilities with someone on our team you can live chat us (1800runaway.org) or call us 24/7 (1-800-RUNAWAY). You do matter and deserve care and support during this.
