  • i need answers..

well you see i'm 16 and a female.and currently reside in the state of illinois, after i graduate highschool, i'll be 18 by then and i plan on leaving home and moving in with very close friends of mine, and i'm currently searching and applying for jobs. Also well a few years ago my sister left with just a phone call goodbye she was 24 at the time and i was curious if i leave at the age of 18 could my parents call the police, and the police return me back home against my will? Because knowing my parents they will make it very difficult or atleast try to make it very difficult for me to be independent.(espcially my mother). if you could please answer my question i'd be grateful, thank you for your time

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard at this time. It sounds like you have a lot going on right now and we’re glad that you have reached out for help. While we aren’t legally trained here, we may be able to provide you with resources that can. Also, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you would like to talk more about what is going on.

It sounds like you are 16 now but planning for when you turn 18 and graduate high school. It’s great that you are planning ahead and trying to make sure that you have a plan. What sorts of jobs are you applying for? Can you tell us a little bit more about what is going on that is making you plan for after high school?

Again, we aren’t legally trained but generally speaking, once you turn 18, you are considered an adult. Since you’ll be an adult, your parents can’t make you return back home. We can provide you with some resources in Illinois that may be able to give you more precise answers. If you can provide us with your city, we can give you some resources in that area.

Again, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through chat from 4:30 PM-11:30 PM (CST), 7 days a week.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.

well i'm just searching for any part time jobs at this particular time i'm already saving money and taking in any side jobs that i can to pay for an necessay things that i'll need in the future and i am in the city of chicago. Also what's making me plan ahead is that the fact of the matter is, my mom and dad never listen to me. sometimes she does slap me or she mostly verbally abuses me saying i never do anything, i'm useless etc. When she gets mad, she gets mad over every little thing that doesn't go her way. she never lets me out whenever i ask it's just a no for no reason. if i try to talk to her she never listens or tries to fix the problem its either her way or the highway. she is unaware that i have boyfriend, and if she were to find out lord knows what she would say. She wants to control my entire life, and my dad is no help he either ignores it or is at work. and once i graduate its going to end up me walking out the door with my belongings.as for college i plan on going, applying for finacial aid, and hopefully get a scholorship that covers most of the tuition. it's just i acknowledge i could have it worse, it's just i'm honestly really tired of feeling like the odd one out in this house, so once i graduate highschool i'm out of this house.

well i'm applying to any jobs right now, i'm taking in as much side jobs i can (babysitting, housework etc) i have a 2nd stash f money for the future. i'm planning ahead because me and my mom we never really got along. if things dont go her way she always finds a way to blame it on me. she mostly verbally abuses me she use to hit me, but now i just avoid her unless she argues with me. she calls me useless, worthless, good for nothing etc. my father never helps he either ignores it, or isn't home.she never lets me go out, but if my little brother wants to he can. i acknowledge the fact i could have it way worse but i'm tired of feeling like the odd one out in my own house. so when it comes down to it once i graduate it's gonna result in me walking out the door if not then, then sooner before i press submit, i'm in the city of chicago.

Thank you for getting back to the National Runaway Switchboard and giving us more information about what is going on. We are sorry to hear that this is happening but we hope to be able to help you out.

It sounds like your parents are sometimes verbally abusive toward you but it sounds like your mom has slapped you in the past. It sounds like this is very difficult for you and we are sorry to hear that this is going on. Have you ever told anyone else about it? If you are interested, one thing we can help you with is to file a report with DCFS. What they would do is an investigation into what you told them and then they would issue a determination as to what should happen next. It’s not something you have to do but it is an option.

It sounds like you have a plan to attend college after graduating high school. Have you told your parents about this plan? What have they said? Unfortunately, you may need to involve them since you are still under 18; they may need to sign paperwork for you until you turn 18. The schools you are applying to will be able to better explain it to you.

We have included some legal resources that are located in Chicago. They will be able to provide you with some legal answers that we can’t give to you.

Chicago Bar Association is available from 9 AM-4:30 PM, Monday-Friday and their phone number 312-738-9200. Another one is called Northwest Youth Outreach and their number is 773-777-6377. They are available from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Monday-Friday.

Again, please keep up the conversation with us so we can continue to provide you with resources and assistance. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

my parents are aware of the plan to go to college, My mom fully supports the decision to go to college. the only part of the plan they aren't aware of would be the moving out. and i'm grateful for that option but filing a reprt won't be necessary.

                RE: i need answers..

Hello, and thanks for responding to us at the National Runaway Switchboard.

It sounds like your mother is not aware of your plan to move out when you go to college. Have you thought about how you will bring that up with her? What do you think her response will be?

We're glad we've been helpful with these issues. Please keep us in mind if you need to discuss this or any other situation you're struggling with by calling 1-800-RUNAWAY (800-786-2929).

                Good luck!
