lately things have been getting really hard at home. my mom's been abusive my entire life, and i've finally had enough. she's taken away my phone and my keys, but i really can't be here anymore. i have a few places i could stay for a few months, but she's threatening to call all of my friends moms/ the cops. is it legal for her to call the cops, even though i'm 18? also, is it legal for her to take away my car and my phone, even though i pay for the insurance every year and bought my phone? my parents have paid for the service, but i told them to stop paying and give it back. also, my dad's out of the picture; he's been in california for 2 years.
    thanks

    Hello there,

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like you’ve been dealing with a lot at home and we’re glad to hear you are trying to reach out for help. We are very sorry to hear your mom has been abusive your entire life and can only imagine how that feels. No one deserves to be abused regardless of age or circumstance.

Most states recognize 18 as the age of majority (legal adulthood). We are not legal experts here; however, your mom may be able to contact the cops if she wants you to leave. Or, if you leave and she doesn’t know where you are, there might be the option for her to file a missing person’s report. In terms of whether or not it is legal or not for her to take away your car and phone, we can’t say with 100% certainty, but if they are under your mom’s name she might have that right.

If you’d like to continue discussing your situation, we encourage you to contact us directly either by calling us 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through Live Chat (red button on www.1800runaway.org) from 4:30 to 11:30pm CST. We are here to listen, offer support, and try and discuss possible options that may be available to you. We wish you the best of luck and look forward to hearing from you!
