Re: im in denver with no where to go..
Thanks for writing in to us. It sounds like you’re in a tough place right now. We’re sorry to hear that you and your best friend don’t have anywhere to stay.
If you want to talk about why you’re homeless right now, we’re absolutely here to listen. It sounds like your main purpose in writing to us was to try to find a safe place to stay, but also maybe find other support services.
You’re right that most youth shelters (under 1have to get in touch with a youth’s legal guardian in order for a youth to stay. We’re not entirely sure what a shelter would do if you weren’t able to get in touch with your guardian. Have you talk to any of the shelters in Denver?
There’s a resource for runaway and homeless youth in Denver called Urban Peak. They do have a youth shelter, but they also have drop-in services that can provide food, laundry and showers. Normally you do not need parental consent to utilize drop-in services. Their number is 303-974-2900. They also have information about what services they offer and directions to their shelter/drop-in center available on their website: http://www.urbanpeak.org/thespot.html.
If you are concerned about their parental notification policy (either for their drop-in center or shelter), you’re welcome to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY and we could conference a call with you to them. We’re a toll-free hotline, so you can call for free from any pay phone. We’re also anonymous and confidential, so you don’t have to tell us anything that you’re not comfortable with. We’d be happy to call Urban Peak, or any other social service agency in Denver for you to find out more about their services.
We look forward to hearing from you. Even if you don’t want help finding local resources, we’re here if you want to talk more about what’s going on. We can help you discuss different options and help you come up with a plan that you're comfortable with. Our hotline is available 24/7. In the meantime, stay safe and warm! Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
