  • I want to save my brother and I from our toxic and dysfunctional household

I have been struggling for years trying to find ways for my brother and me to get emancipated from our extremely toxic parents. We have suffered 6 horrible years of verbal abuse from our stepmother. we have nowhere to go no other family to be with and are stuck trying to get away from the constant pain and stress we get while being at home. we lost our real mother 7 years ago due to suicide and are constantly being compared to her and they tell us when they are upset to kill ourselves just like she did. on a daily, they are constantly calling us names making us feel horrible about ourselves. we are sad and we are hurt and just want to find ways to once feel happy again. we are both very devoted athletes and have tons going for us in the athletic field, however, our stepmother could easily find ways to take it all away from us. I currently have two scholarship offers to d1 schools in the state and my brother has one, but we are both wanting to travel outside of the state that we are in hopefully to our mom's side of the family who are constantly pushing that we find a way to get emancipated. I want to leave but I don't want to be separated and lose contact with my half-siblings and neither does my brother. which will definitely happen if we find a way to get emancipated. please help!

    Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear how your stepmother is treating you and your brother. The kind of things that your parents are saying to you are verbal abuse and are completely unacceptable. It’s great that you have scholarships and prospects as athletes, and you should be very proud! It’s also good that you have people on your mother’s side of the family to help you. Some other good places to go for support are NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) at 1-800-950-NAMI or www.nami.org for mental health support, as well as Childhelp Agency for support and resources for dealing with abuse (at (800) 422-4453 and www.childhelphotline.org). There are different options that you could take, and it would help to know more about your situation. The best way for us to help you is by calling us at 1-800-RUNAWAY or by live chatting with us at 1800runaway.com. We’re here to talk 24/7 and we’re confidential. We hope to hear from you soon.
