Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out to National Runaway Safeline. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and share what's been going on. It sounds like you are interested in hearing a bit more about what it could look like to navigate public or government housing as a 16 year old.
While we are not experts on the law, 18 is generally the age that an individual may leave home without parent permission and/or live independently from their parent or guardian. If you are under 18 and leave home, your parent/guardian may file you as a runaway and you may be returned home. Also, those you stay with may run the risk of being charged with harboring a runaway. For more specifics on the law, the local non-emergency police or legal aid may better answer legal questions.
We can best help by phone or chat as NRS is unable to respond more than twice by forum to assist you. If you would like to talk more in detail please call or chat soon. We can be reached at www.1800runaway.org through our Live Chat or via phone at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929).
We are available 24/7 to listen and provide as much help and support as we can. Thank you again for reaching out to NRS. We hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
NRS

Hi,
Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. We appreciate you reaching out and sharing what has been going on with your living situation and becoming a dad. It sounds like a lot is going on and you feel like leaving is the best option. We are here for you 24/7.
There are a lot of things to consider before leaving. We are not legal experts and depending on the state, 18 is the "age of majority," or the age at which state residents are legally considered adults. In most states, you can’t leave home without your guardian’s permission. If you leave home without permission, your parents/legal guardian could report you as a runaway to the police.
Running away is not illegal, but it is a status offense. This means police would notify your legal guardian if you are found. It would be up to your guardian if you are able to stay or need to return home. Whoever you stay with could be at risk of being charged with harboring a runaway.
It sounds like your mom gave you permission and we want to make sure you are safe. We work best when we can have a conversation with you. We would recommend calling us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or by Live Chat, we are here 24/7.
Also, it sounds like you’re suffering from mental health and want you to know you are not alone. Mental Health Experts, Resources. Find a local organization that can help you coordinate a community event, organize support groups, or provide general info: https://www.mentalhealth.gov/
Please call or chat soon at our website www.1800runaway.org.

Guest repliedI have to go live alone
My mom gives me permission but I don't know where to go and the only thing left for me is to go to a shelter. In a few words, I'm about to leave my house. I'm very depressed at my age and I think I'm going to become a dad.
