  • I'm 15 and I want to get away from my mom to live with my stepdad

my mom's a coin-flip parent, which means that she's mostly nice but is essentially a coin flip away from being abusive/toxic. in my case, she's verbally abusive and toxic. I feel like she plays the victim a lot, but she does give me nice things and clearly loves me, so I feel guilty that I've come to this. but my stepdad would be a better parent to me, and I would really feel more loved, not to mention I would stop failing high school and might actually be able to graduate. thing is, it would be illegal for him to keep me at his house, even if I stay willingly and was never forced. I could probably call child protective services at some point. Even though I would be leaving behind most of my less valuable stuff behind, and my two cats, and I know damn well mom would flip her ********, because I would be betraying her and breaking her heart. I don't fully understand how the laws surrounding this idea works, and don't have much of a plan. I just want to know if I can make my stepdad my legal guardian instead of my mom.

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to NRS. It sounds like you’re dealing with a lot right now, and we’re really glad you’ve reached out. You don’t deserve to be abused, and we’re sorry to hear that you’re being treated this way.
We’re not legal experts here, but we’d be happy to provide you with as much information as we can.

However, with resources varying from state to state, in order to provide you with the most appropriate information on changing guardianship and giving you contacts for local legal aid you can reach out to us via phone (1-800 Runaway) or by using the live chat on our website (1800runaway.org). You can also check out ChildHelp.org if you wanted to find out more about filing an abuse report.

We’re always here to listen, 24/7. We’re wishing you the best of luck and hope to hear from you.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
