  • Problem with my 10 year old brother

    Hello,

I am 17 years old and I am currently living with my mother and my little brother. For reasons of affordability, I share my room with my 10 year old brother and it's getting more and more complicated...
This one has a lot of sleep problems and is often very stressed when mom is not near him to sleep. On top of that I have no privacy, I can't invite my girlfriend except during the day.
I have already talked to my mom about this, but she keeps telling me that it's just a temporary thing (I've been sleeping with him for 8 years...)
I love my little brother with all my heart and it hurts my heart to be mad at him when it's not his fault. I often try to reassure him at night so that he sleeps peacefully, but I am tired. I'm studying law and in the evening I don't feel like babysitting.

    Hi there,

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you are working to preserve the relationships with your family while making the situation at home easier, and we commend you for reaching out for help.

We understand that you may be feeling overwhelmed by sharing a room with your younger brother. It sounds like you have already tried to talk to your mom about it, but are still feeling frustrated with the situation. One option might be to try to write her a letter expressing what you need to change — sometimes it’s helpful to get out all of your thoughts to diffuse any tension and also ensure that you can speak your mind.

Your mental health matters, and it may help to speak to someone like a therapist or school counselor about what you’re feeling. We are happy to provide referrals to additional mental health support resources if you contact us directly by phone or live chat. We are available 24/7 by chat and our phone hotline. Journaling can also be a great way to reflect and release feelings of frustration.

If you’d like to talk more we are happy to discuss your specific situation more if contact us directly by phone or live chat. We wish you all the best!

    Take care,

    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

      Thank you for you answer.

I will do as you say and write him a letter but I don't think the situation will change... I had the idea to buy a night light for my little brother so that he sleeps peacefully. There are websites where I can find it. In short to each problem a solution
