  • Help me, I'm 17 and don't want to go home

My mom has been attacking me and my brother, and I seriously can't take it here anymore. A couple days ago, it got really bad. My mom hit my brother while he was trying to get into my room. She elbowed him in the face and pulled his hair, so I took him to the neighbors. They let us in and my mom came after us and dragged my brother out and back to the house by his arm. It was obviously hurting him, I could tell. By accident, I got her in the face. I was aiming for her shoulder so I could push her away. So she started hitting and scratching me on the head. I have a scar from where she scratched me. So I grabbed my phone and ran out so I could call help, but my neighbor already called the cops. They also called my dad because when we first went there they gave me their phone to call my dad. But I didn't get to call him because my mother started to drag my brother away. So my dad's number was already typed in.

My dad called and took us to his house for the weekend. But today I have to go back and I don't want to. I'm so scared, I'll stay anyway but there. Please someone help me.

Thanks for reaching out; we are glad that you did. It sounds awful for you and your brother at your mom's house. Neither of you deserve to be treated this way, especially since this doesn't sound like the first time. We are glad that you are at your dad's house, and it's understandable that you don't want to go back.
We hope that you will reach out to either our live chat or our hotline so that we can talk this over. Some things to consider are calling your state's child abuse hotline. You can call, or your dad can call, or you can call us to help you do that. They are the ones who help in situations of physical abuse, though we can't promise that they will.
Or, would your dad consider filing for emergency custody or a change in the custody agreement? Those are two formal options for help. If you reach out to us we can talk these over and also help you think of any other options or supports you can access.
You can reach us to chat at this website, or call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929)
We hope to hear from you soon.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
