  • I don't know what to do

I'm 14 years old (f) and I don't know what to do anymore. My mom is very emotionally abusive and she degrades me as much as she can. I'm struggling with school right now and even thought I've been working so hard she's only ever paid attention to the missing work. She's never congratulated me for turning things in and it's gotten to the point where I think she does it for her own entertainment. She's taken my electronics away, forbidden me to go to band, and has called me a lying cheating sneak over and over again. It's so bad that when I feel sick or even throw up she still says she doesn't believe me. I want to call CPS but she takes my phone before I can. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I'm just trapped in a little corner and there's no way out.

    Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out, it sounds like it has been a lot to deal with at home lately. We are glad you reached out, we understand it can be difficult to tale the first step. You mentioned experiencing emotional abuse which may be reportable against your mom. Please keep in mind you by no means deserve any type of abuse, emotional or otherwise. You deserve to feel comfortable in your own home. Unfortunately, emotional abuse is often harder to provide evidence for compared to physical abuse which is often what CPS relies on when conducting an abuse investigation. That said, we can’t be 100% sure what the outcome will be if your local CPS decides to open a case based on what you share. Sometimes CPS decides to remove minors from the home and other times they offer services such as family counseling or mediation instead. The only way to know the outcome might be to reach out to them directly and if you’re ready to do that we are here to help you through that process. Reaching out to Child Help USA at 1-800-422-4453 or www.childhelp.org may help to get a better understanding of what may happen before and after a report is made.
If it’s difficult to make the report yourself, you ask us to help you file one through chat. We would ask a few questions and then call CPS ourselves.
We hope this helps. Please reach out if we can offer any further support.
    Be safe,
    NRS
