  • Just a question

Hi my name is Genesis and I'm 15 but I am planning on running away in December once being 16 because my mother is toxic and has dementia or schizophrenia though it hasn't been proven medically because she thinks she doesn't need help on her mental health, though she does. I'm tired of being here, I have an older brother of 23 years old and he works but he just doesn't care anymore about my mother's behavior and this really affects me negatively in the sense of not being able to study when she is being crazy, and she talks constantly so I feel stressed and causes me anxiety attacks cause I have anxiety and all I want is to live peacefully for a while and do my studies cause I love studying I like doing my life but she doesn't let me. She emotionally abuses me and when she is really crazy she hits me but I try to act tough. So my question was is it okay to run away with the excuse that my mother is toxic? even though it is not really an excuse but true. Also, I'm not planning on running away forever but just for a while, and then come back, cause I just wanna be alone and be free.

    Hello There,

Thank you for reaching out to The National Runaway Safeline, we are here to help and here to listen. It sounds like you are going through a difficult time and we want you to know that you are not alone.

We are not legal experts but we do have some information for you. If you were to leave home without permission your legal guardian could file a runaway report on you. If the police were to find you, they most likely would bring you back home. If you feel like your mom is being abusive you do have the right to file an abuse report. One option to file a report would be to call Child Help at: 1800-422-4453 and they would be able to help you. You can also talk with a school counselor about what is going on at home and they would be able to help you with a report. Lastly, you can always call or chat with us and we would be able to help with a report.

We hope that this information will be helpful to you in your situation. If you have any other questions or would like to explore more options, please give us a call. We are here 24/7 to listen and to provide support. We wish you the best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
