Re: will i get in trouble if i run?

Thank you for contacting us at the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like you are having a difficult time since you can’t take it anymore at home. Running away isn’t generally considered illegal; just a status offense, meaning you can’t do so because you are a minor. We aren’t legal experts though, so as far as the courts intervening, that might be something you have to consult legal advice for. If you’d like to tell us your city and state, we could provide you with some local legal aid referrals.

Do you think your parents would give your grandparents custody? If it is a situation where you feel your parents are not taking care of you adequately, sometimes Child Protective Services (CPS) considers that abuse. If you would like to continue discussing your situation with us, you are welcome to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We are anonymous and confidential and can be reached 24/7.

    Best of luck,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
