Can I runaway at age 17 I’ll be 18 in 5 months. I been getting mentally abused for 4 1/2 years now. My grandma called me a drug addict scumbag who won’t amount to anything and kicked me out. If the cops find me and I refuse to come home what are the penalties? Also I have a job and already pay for all my expenses.

Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out to us, we hope to help as best we can. We’re sorry you’ve been in a home where you have been spoken to like that for so long, you do not deserve that treatment at all. You mentioned having been kicked out, if that’s the case then you are safe for the most part. If police were to run into you, you could report that you had been locked out/kicked out of the home and needed to find a place to stay. In most places if a youth is about to be 18, they might not actively search for you, but you could always call the non-emergency line for your local PD and ask how they handle runaways. As it can vary from department to department. Running away is not a crime, so you would not have a record or be arrested for it. They may be able to force you to go home, but as mentioned before not all PD’s do that. We hope this helps, if you would like to talk more in detail, please reach out to us via call or text.
Stay safe,
NRS
