  • Mom won’t let me leave

I’m 18 years old & my mom verbally abuses me daily & I want to live with my dad but she won’t let me & my dad wants me to come with him to get away from everything. She treats her boyfriend way better than she treat her kids, & i want to leave so bad.. I’ve thought about getting a court order or calling the police.. I just want to leave please help me!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. We’re sorry to hear that your mom is treating you so hurtfully and it makes sense that you would like to leave. While we are not legal experts, we do have a great deal of experiences working with youths in crisis. It is our understanding that once you are 18, you have the right to move out and live where you choose in most states. If you are in NE (19), AL (19), or MS (21), then you would have to wait until the respective age to be able to move out. If you want to talk more about your situation and what options you might have, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on our 24/7 hotline 1-800-786-2929 or chat with us at 1800runaway.org.

    Take care,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
