Re: teenmother crying out for help

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us at the National Runaway Switchboard. We are glad that you took the necessary steps to figuring out other options. We can hear through your voice a sense of triumph despite the dire situation at home. It is certainly not fair to you to have your child around such a negative environment.

Have you thought about looking into section 8 housing administered through the Department of Housing in your state? There can be a long list but there can also be an issue of age also. However, with a child, you can be eligible for transitional living in your city as well. In reality, it makes sense with not desiring to go to a shelter. We are not here to force resources you do not need on you. Especially if you never stayed in a shelter before, we imagine that some shelters may be not fitting for a child. You have every reason to have safety concerns.

It is in our service to call around for resources in your city if you were to give us a call to look in other options for housing. There are agencies set up to assist women and children. If you desire to look into the option of transitional living, please give us a call, if possible. Transitional living seeks to get you back on your feet. They can help you locate with your education and job finding.

We imagine it must be scary for you to not have enough family support. The idea of not having money or a job can be daunting but we hope you continue to stay optimistic and know that in time things can work out. Are you willing and able to take that step? We are proud of you for not getting up and walk about from that person you care for the most. Your son is lucky to have a mother like you.

You seem to have a good understanding of what you do want to do and what you deserve. You deserve love, respect and safety. Your son deserves the same. Do you have other family or friends to set in to provide you that kind of support? We see that you are at the point where you have had enough. We are here for you and hope you can find a way to call us directly. We can be reached 24 hours a day at 1800RUNAWAY. Please understand that we are confidential and anonymous. Please stay strong. Good luck.
