my mother is bipolar and irresponsible. my home life is incredibly toxic. she allowed me to stay with my grandmother but only pulled me back in and now she wont let me leave again. i dont want to be at this house anymore how can i leave? being here makes me suicidal. she doesn’t physically hurt me but there’s constant tension and she snaps at any point. i dont want a relationship with her and i dont want to live here. ive gone to therapy, that didn’t work out. and i don’t feel like my relationship with her is getting better. i feel like i cant take this any longer. ive self harmed but im getting worse mentally i dont know how longer i can deal with her.

RE: im 13 and i need to get out #1
Hello there -
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to reach out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline on our public forum. We are always here to listen and here to help in any way that we can.
We aren't legal experts by any means, but there are only three possible ways that you might be able to legally leave home. Those options include reporting abuse in the household and getting removed by the state, filing for emancipation which most states starts at 16 year old, or if there was a court decision to transfer custody to someone else. Those are the only three ways that a youth could legally leave home that we know of. By looking at the them they are by no means easy to do or even that quick as they take time and planning. You have to think about what is going to be the most realistic for you to do and do successfully.
Now we do offer a service that is basically a Conference Call where the parent/guardian, the youth, and us would be on the phone talking about what has been going on. This way there can be a mediator in between keeping things calm and productive. If you’d feel more comfortable with doing that, just know that it’s always available. It might be a great way to talk about what you are going through and where this feelings might be coming from or to maybe build on your relationship and make it better. So maybe that might be an option for you and your parents. Something constructive so that it certainly opens the lines of communication, but that services is completely up to you.
We hope this response was helpful! Best of luck and reach out to us via phone or online chat if you need more help or what to talk further. Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
