Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out, that’s brave of you to ask for help. You don’t deserve to be treated like that by your mom or anyone else. Your safety is our top priority.
One option you can try is to file an abuse report. Your mom has a legal obligation to provide a safe home for you until you are 18. If you have questions about how to do that or would like someone to help you through the process you can call or chat with us (1800runaway.org or 1-800-786-2929). Another great resource to help you through the process is Child Help. You can chat or call them too (1-800-422-4453 or www.childhelp.org/childhelp-hotline).
Depending on your age, you can try to get emancipated. Each state has different requirements and processes. If you are interested in that you can call or chat with us to get more information about the process in your area.
You said you feel unsafe around your mom. It’s important to have a safety plan for those times. Sometimes it can be as simple as a room in your house you can lock yourself in. If that doesn’t work or you need something safer, National Safe Place can help get you somewhere safe and will get you help. (Text “Safe and your current location, address, city, state” to 44357). After texting they will send you the closest Safe Place site and phone number for the local youth agency. You can also replay “2chat” to text with a trained counselor.
Another option you have is to runaway. You can call or chat with us and we can try to help you find a shelter in your area. If you do that, your mom can file a runaway report with the police. If they know where you are they will pick you up and take you back home. Running away is a status offense, which means it won’t go on record and you can’t be arrested. If you decide to runaway some important things to keep in mind is that you have a safe place with a bed and food for you.
If you would like to talk about these options or any others feel free to reach out to us anytime 24/7. We are here to listen, here to help. Good Luck!
Stay safe,
NRS
