  • I’m 14 and I’m scared to be home, help?

I live with my mom and my grandparents in my grandparents’ house. I love my grandparents so much. My mom has full custody of me but she is really nasty to me and I’ve been verbally & emotionally abused for years. I love being at school but I hate coming home because I have to see my mom and she makes me uncomfortable with how she treats me. Is there any way I could do anything about this? Like, is there a way to get her out of this house so I can just live with my grandparents? I don’t like being around her and yesterday things got really bad and I don’t feel like I can do this anymore. Please help. Thanks.

    Hey there,

We are sorry to hear things are rough at home due to your mom right now. At least it does sound like you have a good relationship with your grandparents, so that is good.

As for what you can do:

One option would be to talk to your grandparents in a very real, open, and honest way about what's going on and how you feel. Perhaps they can intervene or may have some suggestions for you. Another option would be to file an abuse report with your state's child abuse reporting hotline. You may also think about talking to a teacher or school counselor about what's going on, how you feel, and see what they have to say. Or you can call us and we can perhaps help you think of some other options. Our number is 1-800-RUNAWAY and we are here 24/7. Or you can chat with us via our website: www.1800runaway.org.

Please know that things can get better. We hope to hear from you soon!

      Hey!

I also wanted to just let you know that you're doing amazing I know how it feels to be scared of your own home and your own parent(s). I dealt with a very toxic home environment for years due to my father and I let it blow up before I reached out for help. It forced me into a terrible position where I lost most of my friends and also someone I held very close to me.

I know I'm not a professional, but you seem very sweet. I just want you to know that I'm proud of you and you should be very proud of yourself for reaching out to get help Things do get better, you just have to give it a little time
