      Hello,

        help please

I need help really badly. I was just wondering how much they investagate when it comes to a runaway child. I'm 13 and want to runaway to my friends house. My parents have NEVER met him they don't even know I know him. He's not my boyfriend or anything either. Anyways, I know that's its not cool to give your adress out or anything bt I met him online. If I ranaway and my parents called the cops would they ask them if I have any online accounts on anything? Cause that's where I met him, he told me where he lives and its only 2 hours and 30 minutes away. I'm sorry I didn't explain this very well but I was basically wondering how much they'd investigate. Like would they track my phone and stuff and try and look at my last call or something?(if they even have the ability) I need to know cause I'm a lot smarter than people give me credit for and I'm just wondering how much id have to cover up my tracks for them to not fined me please I so badly want to know

          I need Help Badly

          Hi,
Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.
It sounds like you are thinking of running away and planning to go to the house of a person you met on line.

          Is that right?

You are also concerned about how much the authorities would investigate someone who is a runaway.
We are not aware of what your situation is like at home but we do understand that it is serious enough to make you consider running away.

This probably has been a tough decision for you to face.

          How are you feeling?

We first want to stress the importance of your safety in going to someone you met on line.
We can appreciate your awareness about giving out your personal information but what is it about this person that makes you feel that it is okay to go to their house?

It’s okay to bounce your thoughts off of someone else.
The fact that you are reaching out for some information is very good.
Maybe you can call our 24hr crisis line at 1-800-Runaway (786-2929) and speak to one of our crisis liners.
We can discuss your options and try to provide you with as much information as we can to your questions.
There may be emergency runaway/homeless youth shelters in your area that we can give you referrals for.

          Does that make sense?

You sound pretty sure about leaving home and gaining some assurance you won’t be found.
We hope you will consider some assurances about your well being.
You stated this person lives at least two hours or more away.

How are you planning to travel?

Have you considered going to another friend or relative’s home while trying to figure out your situation?
Perhaps there is a teacher or counselor at school who you can talk with about how you have been feeling or what life has been like at home.

          What to do you think?

It’s not a bad idea to have a backup plan if things are not quite what you thought.
All we can tell you in general about the actions of the police is that once there is a runaway report filed they can investigate any leads they may get concerning the case.

All reported runaways are placed in a national police data base.
We are not able to predict how they may choose to pursue.

          Does that make sense?

Please remember you have options to contact the National Runaway Safeline through our website www.1800Runaway.org you can post another bulletin or use our live chat so you can talk one on with one of our crisis liners.

NRS live chat is available from 4:30pm until 11:30pm (CST).
You can also contact us by sending a crisis email at [email protected]

We hope that you are able to figure out a safe way to cope with your situation.
Remember NRS is available 24hrs toll free at 1-800-Runaway (786-2929)

            makes sense

I understand what your saying I'm just completely aware that my mom would call the police once she realised I was gone and everytime I look up the exact procedure police take for runaways under the age of 18 nothing really comes up but thanks for answeing my question in general. But just wondering my dad would probably ask them if they could track my phone(he was raised to pay attention and was a marine so he's quite strict and observant) could they actually track my phone? Would I have to get rid of my phone?

I'm just wondering I literally have no idea. I watch a lot of cop and detective shows and I see how much they investigate murder cases and stuff and wanted to know if it would be all out like that?

              Re: makes sense

              Hey,
It's really hard to say. When we talk about all of the things that can happen, we do that so people are aware of the consequences. We're really not sure if they will trace your calls or go into internet accounts...there is a possibility for all of that to happen we just can't say how likely it is.

What do you think would happen if they actually found you (regardless of the method they used)? What would things be like at home if you were to be picked up?

Sounds like you have a lot to consider. If you'd like to explore your options and talk about how we can be available to you, please call us at 1800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We're anonymous and confidential so you don't have to tell us who or where you are.

              Best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

                Question

Hello I am 15 and I have plans to runaway in approx. Two months, I have a place to stay and I will be well taken care of, it is far from my hometown do I dont think police is a problem but I do have a question, I dont have my permit and I was wondering is there any possible way I can get my liscense or pemit without being tracked. Goes the same for a card or getting a job in a year. Um, im planning on retrieveing my social security car and birth certificate and any other legal document. Will I need that? If I want a job.. I think I might.. But however I dont know if I can get a job if im a runaway. So um yea. Also if I were to go to the hospital would I be tracked or doctors. Thank you for your help and hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.

                  RE: Question

                  Hello,

Thank you for contacting us during this difficult time. It sounds like you have really planned this out and know what you want. We are not legal experts and cannot tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. Typically having documentation can be helpful when staying at shelters or applying for a job.

Have you ever run away before? Technically, running away is not against the law. In most places it is considered a status offence. However, anyone that you’re caught staying with could be charged with ‘harboring a runaway’. Your legal guardians do have the right to file a runaway report if you leave without permission. Your information would be entered into a national database stating that if found, you are to be returned back to your hometown, even if you have crossed state lines. We are not lawyers, so we cannot tell you what a hospital would be required to do.

If you would like to explore more options, we are available for you 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY(786-2929). We are anonymous and confidential and here to help in any way we can. We can also be accessed by live chat from 4:30pm-11:30pm Central Standard Time at www.1800runaway.org. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck!

Since im 18 and not technically living with my family but stay in another house for time to time. What is the normal time limit until my friends mom can call the cops on me for walking out, and since im in her care for those couple of days?

Thank you for contacting us and asking questions. We are glad that you have reached out to us for assistance and hopefully, we can provide you with some.

It sounds like you are currently 18 years old and staying with a friend but you are wondering how long you have until your friends mom can call the police, is that correct? Now, we aren’t legally trained here so we wouldn’t be able to give you specific answers but it is our understanding that once a youth turns 18, they are considered to be an adult. So, if you left your friends house, their mom may not be able to call the police about it. If you wanted to be sure, you may be able to talk with the local police department and ask them if they would take a report.

If you do decide to leave their, do you have another safe place to go? Here at the National Runaway Safeline, we may be able to help you find a shelter or safe place to go. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) if you would like to call and talk with someone. We also have online chat services that are available from 4:30 PM-11:30 PM (CST) and can be found on our website (www.1800runaway.org).

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.

                          Hello,
Thanks for reaching out to us. Sounds you need to figure things out quickly but it’s good that you’re asking questions and trying to find the best outcome for yourself. We’re here to help as best as we can.

Depending on your state, the legal age of adulthood might be 18. That means that you’re legally not allowed to choose where you live until that age. Sometimes having a child will change that somewhat but again, it depends on the laws in your state. A good way to find out what are your rights are, considering your age, is to call the local non-emergency police number. You can probably just type that info online and search for your area. If you need help looking for that number you can call us.

It’s difficult to figure out what is available to you because of your age and not knowing your state.

And if you’d like to explore your options and talk about what might be available to you, you can call us at 1800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We’re anonymous, confidential and available 24/7. We also have live chat through our website from 430p-1130p (CST), if that works better for you.

                          Best of luck,

                            Runaway

                            Hello,
I just turned 17 in February, but I have been having thoughts of running away because my mom and step-dad drink a lot of alcohol around me and sometimes things get violent. I have a place far enough away to go that my parents wouldn't know where I went, but what would happen to me if I did get caught? I will be living with one of my friends that my parents don't know. They are 18 years of age and have a good-paying job and when I got there and settled in I would get a job to help out with rent and food. If I make it to the age of 18 without being caught can I still get in trouble if I get caught after I turn 18? Should I leave a note to my parents saying that I left and I will be fine I just went away to live life on my own? Should I leave my phone and car here so they can't track my phone or report the car as stolen? And can your parents report you as a runaway if they tell you to move out and you do it even if you are under the age of 18?

                              Hi,

We are so glad you decided to contact us today. It sounds like you dealing with a really challenging situation at home, and it is great that you are thinking about a plan and the consequences before taking action. We would love to help you out in any way we can.

There are a few factors you might want to consider before running away. Without knowing more information, it is hard for us to provide specific information. Generally, running away is not illegal, but it is considered a “status offense,” meaning that the police can take you back to your legal guardians if they file a runaway report. However in some states, the age of majority is actually 17. Furthermore, some local police departments stop taking Runaway Reports and returning youth to their legal guardians after age 17. You might want to call your local police department’s non-emergency phone number and ask them what they would do if you ran away. You do not need to provide any identifying information, and they may be able to provide you with more specific answers. You can find that number on USACops.com. We can also help you find the appropriate number if you call our 24-hour hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY. Another option you might want to consider is contacting your county’s Department of Child and Family Services or Child Protective Services. An agent at one of these organizations may be able to help you find a positive alternative living situation without violating the law. Again, if you call our hotline, we can provide you with additional information about these options and the phone numbers for these organizations.

There are other aspects of running away that you may want to think about before taking action. For example, you might want to think about whether you would be able to finish high school if you moved to your friend’s place. You could think about other living situations that your mom and step-dad might actually approve of that may allow you to stay in school and would prevent your parents from calling the police. We would be more than happy to discuss such options with you. Our hotline is 24/7 or you can chat with one of our crisis counselors via our website from 4:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Again, thank you for reaching out to us. We would love to help and look forward to hearing more from you soon.

                              Sincerely,

                              NRS
