I tried to tell social services and they didn't have enough proof, so I couldn't be removed from my home. So I'm planning on running away and I have a place to stay planned out.I just have a few questions... Could I turn myself in at eighteen and not get in trouble?

It sounds like you're wanting to leave home and turn yourself in at 18. We're not sure what happens with runaway reports after someone listed turns 18. If that's the age of majority in that state, the report can potentially expire or...we're not sure. The only people that would be able to answer that question are the people that enforce it, the local police department. You may try calling them.

I am 14 and i dont think that i need to live with the person that i am living with im planing to runaway but if i do what can the cops do and will i be taking back to where i dont wont to be i wont to leave because my guardian is trying to send me to jail

If I run away...

I'm seriously considering running away because my parents are heavily burdoning and provide me with no privacy, on top of being verbally abusive to me. If I were to call the police myself and tell them I'm running away beforehand. Would they be searching for me as much as if I had not?

Generally speaking, the police do not actively search for runaways. Contacting the police before may or may not change the way that they will handle your case, for example, possibly not accepting a runaway report. You can contact your local non-emergency police hotline for additional information. You may be able to inquire what would hypothetical happen if a youth informed the police before leaving and so forth.

Hi i am 16 years old.. && im always arguing with my family i have two older sisters where one of them hit my mom when she was 15 now shes 21 my other sister ran away fron home several times && now is 19 && has two kids.. && i have been trying to graduate && make mu parents proud bit it gets hard when they are conatantly arguing with me mu mom && dad have said really mean things they were mostly calling me a slut tonight... i have a really bad past && they were bringing that up so i was telling my boyfriend i wanted to run away but i have a question if i run away to califronia && my mom files a runways will the cops be able to find me at california i live in sandy oregon && im just wondering ig if the cops could find me in california? Or what will happen to me?

If you run away, your parents may file a runaway report. That puts you into a national database of missing/runaway youth. Therefore, it is possible that if you run away to another state, police in that state will be able to see your runaway report and know you are missing. However, police from your own state will not likely pursue you across state lines. If you do run away to California, do you have a place to stay that is safe? We can help you brainstorm ideas on where you might go, whether that be family, friend, or shelter.

Im 16 and honestly can't stay home anymore. I have so many family problems. It's all pulling me down and is not good for me. If I leave with my boyfriend who's also 16 will they search for us,?how long do they usually search? Will they still look for us if we go across the country. Also do they stop looking once we turn 18?

It sounds like you are dealing with a lot of stress and would like to get away. If you left home without permission, your parents will have the right to file you as a runaway. It is hard to determine how exactly the police will handle your case because it varies a lot by state, county, and even city. Generally speaking once a runaway report if filed, it is then entered into a national law enforcement database.

The police do not actively search for runaways. However if a runaway is picked up by the police on the streets, transportation arrangements for the youth to return home is usually made (i.e. police drop youth off at home or legal guardian pick youth up from station). Once a minor reaches the age of majority which is generally 18 in most states, the runaway report becomes inactive.

Runaway

Hi,
I'm 16 and I've been getting abused verbally and physically for 2 years now. I started cutting and committed suicide once. Everything is so hard on me. My mom said she could take everything away from me. Last year she took off the wifi, my phone, my iPod, iPad, and laptop for 9 months I was completely isolated. This summer she's been abusing me verbally and I don't wanna call the cops on her because she's my mom and she's been treating me this way for 2 years only and I know she's under pressure but I can't take it anymore even my sister and aunt and her friends abuse me verbally. It really hurts. I've planned to move to another state. Could she call the cops on me and they would put the time to find me? The person there is gonna take care of me. He's a friend and him and his family said they would take me in.

Hello,

It sounds like a really difficult situation to be in -- the abuse, taking things away from you, and then having other family members on you too -- it makes sense you would want to be somewhere else. You do have the right to feel safe in your own home. We are mandated reporters, so if were to call us and give specific information such as names, locations, dates of abuse etc., we are required by law to report it to the police. Your teachers and counselors are also mandated reporters so if that is an option, you can always tell them about the abuse as well.
You also mentioned feeling suicidal and like hurting yourself. The National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK(8255) is also available to talk to you about what's going on.
Your Mom can certainly report you as a runaway, but it's fairly unlikely that the police will come searching for you. The one thing to be aware of is that your parents could charge the people taking care of you with "harboring a runaway." While running away is not a crime, it is a crime to take someone in who is away from home without parental permission. This is a situation where there might be a number of options you could consider. my mom hates me

My mom straight up told me I hate you and always want me to do something she hate seeing me sit down always making me do bizzar chores and always telling me I'll never succeed in life .For some time know I planed to run away.....sometime I try to think it will get better but it keep get worse what should I do. Moving out

A lot of stuff has been going on at home. 3 months ago my dad just up and randomly decided we were gonna move in with family 60 miles away from where we lived. We moved over there and then my parents ended up separating (not legally) and I'm with my mom right now at my grandmas and he's over at my grandpas. There's some of the story but here's my problem: he made me leave right before my senior year. And that's really important to me so my friend and his parents have agreed to let me stay all of senior year. They are really awesome. The thing is my dad wants me to stay over where he is and not back to where I was. My mom has already met with my friends parents and has agreed to let me stay. My dad has threatened to call the cops if I go over there. What should I do? I'm 16 and I would get emancipated but that takes too long.
