i accidentally posted a reply as this is a bit confusing to work lol but here we go. I am trying to get out a situation with my abusive father and he is active duty military. Im afraid that if i leave i will be unable to have my cousin take custody as SHE is the person i'd prefer to have that over me. I was told that i wouldn't be able to get that as i am military property technically but i have no idea what to do because i cannot do this anymore. Im fifteen years old. all i want is to leave to my cousins house without having to worry about military getting in between, will i be safe to do so? I'd also like to state that the night i leave i will be calling the police and cps ahead of time so they are away incase my parents do file a runaway report so im safer in that sense.

Hi,
Thank you for reaching out to us; we are glad that you did. It sounds like things have been very difficult and stressful for you because your father is abusive. We are glad that you have your cousin to believe you and wanting to be a help to you. You don’t deserve to be abused or mistreated and we want to help you with your options.
We aren’t aware of any circumstances where you would be considered anyone’s property - military or otherwise. You are a free and equal human being in the eyes of the law. However, your parents have rights and responsibility for you while you are a minor, so that is where the difficulty in living with your cousin lies.
You do have the right to file a report with CPS, and to notify the police, but neither agency can give you permission to stay with your cousin permanently without some time passing and an investigation by CPS taking place. We hope that you consider contacting www.nationalsafeplace.org and talking to a counselor there. If they send you to a Safe Place location, they can send a representative from a local youth agency to assist you. You deserve to be helped.
We hope that you will reach out to us either by phone or chat so that we can talk this over. You have been very brave and it is understandable that you want to live in a safe place.
The best way for us to help you is by listening to you and helping you to figure some options to help in your situation. We are here for you or the youth 24/7 either by calling 1-800-786-2929 or via live chat through www.1800runaway.org
We are confidential and are here 24/7 to listen and help.
Sincerely,
NRS
