  • Moving Out

Hello. I was wondering if anybody had any advice for me on what to do.

I am currently 17. I will be 18 soon and I want to move out. My mother has bipolar disorder and it has ruined my life. She is manipulative and abusive. So I want to get away as soon as possible. However, I have no car (not even a drivers permit because my mom never let me get it) and no money.

Is there anywhere I can go until I can get a job and a car?

    Thank you

    Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out and share a post on our bulletin. Asking for help is a great first step to putting together a long term plan. It sounds like you have been incredibly resilient and strong while coping with abuse at home and your mother's mental health issues. You deserve to be treated with respect and feel safe where you are living.

If you call our hotline at 1800-786-2929 or use our live chat services at, we can do a search for youth shelters and other supportive housing services in your area. These can provide a stable place to live while you work toward becoming independent with support. Shelters and transitional living programs can often help young people find employment, continue their education, and learn important life skills.

We are available 24/7 to support you and connect you with resources. We can best help by phone or chat as NRS is unable to respond more than twice by email or bulletin for assistance. We hope to hear from you soon!

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
