  • COVID-19 has left me jobless and trapped at home

Hi. I am 20 years old and have been in college since summer 2018. I live off campus and use financial aid to pay most of my rent and work to pay the rest. I have had problems with my mother since I was 12 she has been very emotionally abusive and manipulative and since I left for college I've come to realize that I suffer from great anxiety that I find to be a result of that. I have a great amount of resentment towards my mother and she denies she ever did anything wrong and my father says I cannot hold a grudge. I am currently out of work and my parents promised my rent would be paid if I stayed home during the pandemic for my safety because I have asthma. Now they say they will not pay my rent. And I have already lost the opportunity for hours at my job. They refuse to let me leave and won't let me take my car (title in father's name). I have been severely depressed for months due to OTHER personal circumstances and now I am trapped in an environment that is toxic and am getting absolutely nothing. I want so badly to leave but I am terrified. I don't want to ruin my ties with them regardless of the issues we have but I think it is my only way. I dont think I can afford my lease and may get evicted without work. No evictions right now but when this all slows down I will just end up getting evicted then. I just want to leave I am so scared. My depression and anxiety have been so much worse since I've been here and I feel completely trapped and hopeless.

    Hello There,
Thank you for reaching out to The National Runaway Safeline, and sharing with us a little bit of what’s been going on in your life.
With everything going on with the COVID-19 it is understandable that you are feeling depressed and more anxiety than usual. We want you to know that you are not alone and we are here to help you. One option to consider is talking with your parents about how they said they were going to help you pay rent and see if they have options for you.
Another option is to file for unemployment, with the COVID- 19 they may be waiving the waiting period to get an unemployment check. To find out more about unemployment and how to apply you can contact your states unemployment office. Also you may want to consider talking with your landlord and seeing if they can help you with a payment plan or any other options. A lot of people are in your situation so people may be more willing to work with you if you let them know what is going on.
We hope that this information will be helpful to you in your situation. If you have any other questions or would like to explore more options please give us a call. We are here 24/7 to listen and to provide support. Best of luck!
