  • Mom's never here and i cant stand it a home anymore

My mom recently got a boyfriend who shes constantly leaving home for. She was even gone for a full week and only came back to switch clothes. Im 16 and i have to watch over my two little sisters and my little brother. Im just so sick of always having to clean and cook and never being able to live a normal teenage life. We tried talking to her about it but shes so headstrong and always uses the excuses of "wanting a life of her own" and whenever she is home all she does is sleep and complain about us and how she hates being there. It just hurts and im slowly going insane here. My grandma is the only real support i have and my mom treats her like ********. I really dont know what to do anymore and im afraid if this keeps going on any longer ill end up doing something to my self ill regret. Talking to her doesn't help, and im constantly cleaning the house in hopes that she'll wanna stay but nothing is working. She doesn't see anything wrong with it even when i told her hope i felt. I feel like i =m just being dramatic and maybe this is normal. I really dont know anymore im going crazy

    Hi there,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you have been having a really difficult time at we’re sorry to hear about this. We’re really glad you reached out and shared a bit of your situation, we’re here to help you the best that we can.

It sounds like your mom has found happiness with her new boyfriend, but she is leaving a lot of responsibility on you to take care of your siblings and the house. This has to be incredibly stressful. It’s understandable why you would be feeling the way that you are, this is a lot to handle as a 16 year old. You deserve the right to spend time doing things for yourself as any 16 year old does.

You shared that your grandma has been supportive of you which is good to hear. One option may be to talk with your grandma about either ways to talk to your mom, because it sounds like your efforts have unfortunately not been successful so far, or the potential to have custody transferred to your grandma. This is something your grandma would have to be on board with, of course, but it sounds like that is something she could be open to for the sake of you and your siblings.

We’re here to help you in any way that we can. One service we offer is conference calling with youth with youth and their legal guardians. If you think we may be able to assist in facilitating a conversation between you and your mother, you can call us at (800) RUNAWAY.

We’re here 24/7 to help you the best we can. Please do not hesitate to call or chat.

    Best,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
