Re: My friends and i want to run away

Hi and thanks for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’ve taken the time to really think about why you each want to run, and the possible consequences. Living at home can be tough, and when we find friends going through similar situations, it may feel easier to pick up and leave everything behind.

However, we do want you to know that when you leave home without permission, you’re considered a runaway (I’m not sure what you mean by “walk away” but leaving without permission is considered running away). Running away is not illegal, but it is a status offense. This means that you could get into more trouble if you are already in trouble with the law (like being on probation, for example). If you run away, your legal guardians have the option to make a report with the police, where your name and other identifying information (possibly a picture) will be given. All of that information will be put into the police system so if they find you in a park or on the street, they will know you are a runaway.

Are there ways to make home better for you so you don’t feel the need to run? For example, have you tried to talk with your sister about what causes the fights and try to fix it? We have several resources here at NRS that might be helpful to your situation. One of them is a conference call service, where someone here would be on the phone with both you and a parent to make sure each side is able to say what they want, and to be heard. We also have a database of resources all over the country, like therapy and counseling, if you think that might help.

Thank you again for reaching out to us, and we wish you the best. Someone is always here at 1-800-RUNAWAY, and we encourage you to call if you would like more help and support.

    Best,
    NRS

My friends and i want to run away

The urge of running away is so real rn.

There are four of us,There is going to be "me", "Friend #1", "Friend #2" and "Friend #3" to explain what's happening.

So since this halloween my friends and i came up with a plan to run away. We have researched ALOT about this topic.
Me and friend #1 are a little unsure, but at the moment that we talk about it, we are totally ready to run. Friend # 2 and 3, really want to run
but i definitely feel like inside all four of us, we don't have the guts to run from our warm homes. We aren't abused. We are just fed up with ********.
At my house, my sister and i fight really badly, but then other times were "normal" Same with friend #1. The similarity between me, and friends # 2 and 3 is
our dads don't stand up to our moms who are major **********es when it becomes a fight. But see, it's illegal to "run" away, and ik that our parents will all call the police.
I think that our question is, Can 13 and 14 year olds "walk away" instead of running away?
