  • Family issues what to do

i will be 18 in 2 weeks. i'm currently dating a girl(i'm bi) and my mom is completely against it. she tracks my phone. they let my older brother and 13 year old sister do whatever they want no questions asked but i'm not allowed to do anything. yet i'm the one who gets asked to clean the house the most and do all that. i don't want to live at home anymore but i don't want to completely ruin my relationship with my mom and i know i'm going to hurt her but i have to move out eventually anyway. my dad has no idea either so i don't know how to handle it. do i tell him i want to go live with her or let him find out?

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out and providing some background on your situation. We are so sorry to hear your mom is not accepting of your sexuality and imagine that’s quite hard. Please know we’re not here to judge you and there is support out there. We are here to listen and provide support and there is also http://www.thetrevorproject.org/. It sounds like you have just have a little bit longer until your 18th birthday and are contemplating moving out. We are not legal experts; however, you will likely have an easier time from a legal standpoint if you are able to wait and leave after your birthday. Depending on your city/state, it is also possible the police will take less action the closer you are until 18, should you decide to leave sooner. Either way, we’d be happy to talk over pros and cons with you and hopefully help you come up with a plan. It sounds like you’re still deciding how to break the news to your parents and understandably do not want to completely ruin your relationship. You sound like a caring person who wishes for acceptance and a little more independence. We encourage you to reach out to us directly if you’d like to keep talking. Live Chat opens today at 4:30pm CST so we hope you give that a try. Best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
