  • Is it possible for me to run away and go to a foster home or homeless shelter.

I’m 14 and my parents psychologically and verbally abuse me constantly, earlier today my step dad took a bath and told me not to do dishes, then when he gets out of the bath, he threatens to send me away for not doing what he said, then he smiled at me and said that he allowed me into his house, he’ll kick me right out again. Every time his daughter is mean to me and I either talk back to her or tell my mom, he threatens to beat me. He hasn’t beat me in a few years, but that’s because I said I would call the cops if he did. I’m not scared about my physical health, but I am afraid that he really is messing with my brain. I had a GPA of 3.8 unweighted until he started messing with me, now its 2.7, and I work twice as hard. I really do hate this man and I believe he has given me mental damage. Please tell me what I can do?

    Hi,
Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline.

It sounds like you are in a tough situation and may be looking for some options to help cope with everything. One of them seems to be running away. You don’t deserve to be abused by anyone. You are not to blame for how others behave.

We understand how difficult it must that it has been very hard for you to cope with this type of treatment and behavior.
You are very brave for speaking out about it. Good for you.
Perhaps you might consider talking with your mother about the situation and see if she is supportive. Another option when there is stress and frustrations with something or someone counseling may be something to consider.
Having a space to vent and explore options may often bring out a solution previously not thought of.

NRS is here to listen and here to help.
We are here as support to help you through this challenging time.
