I'm 14 and I'm the middle child of five kids that my mom has. I don't really get treated fairly, while my older and younger brother get to do whatever they want I'm the one that has to do a lot of stuff like take care of my little sister when I have other things that I want to do. They keep saying that I'm the troubled child, when they let my brothers do anything they want. This has been going on for a bit over 4 years and I'm sick and tired of it. I already have two friends who would take me in if I ran away. Now, my parents are saying that I have to choose between military school or being homeschooled. I don't want to do either of those things. I just want to move out, and it's mostly because of the way I'm treated there.

Thanks for reaching out to NRS, it sounds like you’re really going through a lot at home. It’s great that you’re considering all your options. We aren't legal experts bit because you are 14, you are not yet considered a “legal adult.” This means that if you moved out, your parents could file a Runaway Report or report you missing. If police find you, they would bring you back home – there’s also the possibility that the person you are staying with could get in trouble for harboring a runaway (which basically means, they are letting you stay with them without your parents’ permission). It’s important to know that running away isn’t illegal – you can’t be arrested for running away and it won’t go on your permanent record, it’s just considered a “status offense” since you’re a minor.

You may have other options to consider as well, such as family counseling. If you haven’t already, try talking to a school counselor about how you are feeling – they can also help you to see what resources are available to you in your area. In addition, we offer conference call services, where we can mediate a conversation between you and your parents to make sure everyone stays respectful and has a chance to feel heard.
