  • i need to get out

I'm 15, and I'll be turning 16 in February. My mom has always been extremely controlling and emotional abusive. She also hold me to standards that I can't reach, due to both mental issues and outside issues. She says she understands that I have mental illnesses, but she constantly tells me to get over it, and I can't stand it anymore. I can't stand my dad constantly trying to be the "good guy" while he squishes my own feelings into the ground, I can't stand my mom always getting on my case for no logical reason. Sometimes she does have a good reason, but honestly at this point I can't tell the reason between a stupid reason or a good reason anymore. It's gotten to the point where I can't properly express how I'm feeling without my parents making fun of me or shutting me down. I can't handle this environment anymore, but I don't have anywhere to go that my parents would let me stay until I could be on my own. I have some friends who live on their own who are willing to take me in, but I know I would need to get parent permission for that, or I would need to get emancipated, which I cannot do, seeing as I don't have any source of income. Running away seems like the worst option, but it's the only one I can think of. I need to get out of here, please help, or send me in the direction of someone who can help, thank you.

Re: i need to get out

Hello, thank you for calling the National Runaway Safeline. It is very brave of you to open up to us about your situation. It seems like you've been struggling at home lately with your parents and treated very unfairly. If you were to runaway from home, it is important to make sure you'll be safe. Some of the things to think about include how you will afford food and where you will stay. Since you're under the age of minority, leaving your home without parental permission can possibly result in police brining you back home. Also, while running away isn't a crime by itself, the people you stay with, such as friends or other relatives, could also get in trouble for harboring a runaway. Along with that, you mentioned you've been struggling lately with your mental health. Your mental wellbeing is very important to us at NRS, so please know you could give us a call at 1(800)786-2929 if you ever need someone to talk to or some support through this hard time. You could also try reaching out to your school counselor or a therapist for help. If you would like more information about mental health support in your area, you could give us a call and we could help you find some resources. We hope to hear from you soon, thank you and good luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

        Hello,

We would be happy to try and help with your boyfriends situation. In order to receive help more immediately, it would help to call or chat with us. If he is a minor, it may be hard for him to stay away from home without permission. But we can try to talk through options.

        Best,
        NRS
