I want to runaway. My family abuses me and nobody has done anything about it. I can't take it here anymore. Its coming to the choice between suicide or running away. I have a plan. I'm going to take a bus to this person's house. I have a place to stay. They will support me. I don't have to worry about that. I know they are a good person.. I've talked to them long enough but I wanted to know, what else do I need to do so I'm not caught? I can't go back home.. I'm even going to change my appearance. Do I need a fake Id? What if I get pregnant? Help please

    Hey!

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. We're sorry that you're in an abusive situation. If you haven't already tried child abuse reporting, and would like to, we would be happy to help you do that. Between the options of suicide and running away, running away is definitely better! If you want to talk to someone about your suicidal thoughts, the National Suicide Hotline (1-800-273-8255) is a great resource for that.

While we can't advise you about how to avoid getting caught, we can tell you a little bit about the legal issues here. We're not legal experts (although we can put you in touch with legal experts if you like) but here are the basics: it's not a crime to run away, but if your guardians file a runaway report, the police will most likely take you back if they find you. However, any adult you were staying with could possibly face criminal charges. If you're concerned about getting pregnant, you might call Planned Parenthood (1-800-230-7526) - they ought to be able to give you advice about contraception and safe sex, as well as directing you to local women's health clinics.

It sounds like you're pretty sure about the person you're planning to go stay with, which is fair. Still, it couldn't hurt to have a backup plan in case things don't work out with this person. Feel free to call us at any time at 1-800-786-2929! We would be happy to help you explore all your options.

    Stay Strong,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
