  • Want to see LDR boyfriend, parents threat to kick me out if I go

I am 20 years old and I live with my parents. My boyfriend lives 10 hours away and recently bought me a plane ticket to go see him. I ran away with my boyfriend over the summer and spent 2 weeks with him and my parents were not happy.
They decided to let me come back and stay with them and give me another chance. Everything is going well and then when I told my mom that I was going out to see him, she said that I am 20 and I am an adult, but as long as I am under her house
I will follow her rules. She said I can make the own choice to go, but when I get back things won't be the same and I will be on my own.
How can I convince my parents or tell them I am going without getting thrown out? I respect my parents a lot, but the ticket has already been purchased and I still plan on going despite everything.

Hello and thanks for reaching out on our forum. It sounds like you’re trying to plan a visit to see your long-distance boyfriend and are concerned with your parent’s reaction. Please know we are not here to judge you and can talk to you about possible ways to approach your parents. It sounds like you recognize you can leave at age 20. However, because you live at home and are under the rules of your parents there is more at stake such as getting kicked out of the home.

You mentioned you ran away with your boyfriend over the summer and your parents were not happy about that decision. Things seem to be going okay now, although your parents do not seem to be okay with you leaving to visit him again. Based on everything you’ve shared, we’re wondering if maybe there is some room for compromise with your parents. For example, if you think your parents would be more willing to support your decision if you wrote out a list of improvements/accomplishments you’ve had since you ran away this summer.

Or, instead of simply getting thrown out of your parent’s home, perhaps taking steps towards independent housing is an option. Some cities/states offer transitional living programs for young adults who qualify. If you are not working or receiving any sources of income and there is a program near you, this might work while you’re able to get on your feet. Unfortunately, we are not here to make the decision for you, although we recognize it is a tough decision. If you’d like to keep going over pros and cons and possible options, we encourage you to reach out through our Live Chat. Best of luck!

Yes, I feel like I could compromise with them. What things should I say to them to help move in the right direction? I want this really bad and I do want to go with their blessing and want them to know how important it is to me that they trust me and can come to terms with the fact that I am responsible. I don't want to tell them that I am going despite what they have to say, so I am hoping that everything goes over well.
