  • I'm 18, turning 19 next january. I want to leave the house for good.

I'm 18 attending community college, and I want to leave the house before my uncle becomes hostile towards me. I'm currently staying with him for college, but since I got here he has been threatening to send me back to my grandma in Jamaica.
I don't want to go back. Recently we had an argument and he threatened me. It's not the first time he's threatened me but it's the first time he has threatened to hurt me.
I rather drop 2 of my classes and collect the money and head out to a shelter or friends house until I can make enough money to leave va for utah.

Ever since I came he has been quick to find faults in who I am as a person. He says he's trying to figure me out, but his friends have a better understanding of who I am.
He doesn't seem to want to accept who I am as a person. So leaving the house seems like a better option. Talking to him doesn't work, because he's a one sided human being not willing to change.
I only have $80 in my bank account currently, but if I refund 2 of my classes I'll have 960.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to write to us here at the National Runaway Safeline.
It sounds like living with your uncle is really wearing on you we are sorry to hear that he is hostile towards you, it is understandable why you would want to leave a place like this.
You said that you would want to drop two class in order to have some money to move out with, have you considered looking into getting a job. You can even inquire at your school about work study programs that they might have. With that being said since you are 18 (the age of majority in most states) you have the right to move anywhere you want to without having to talk to your uncle about it.
Additionally in the meantime of moving out. If you ever felt like your safety is threatened you do have to right to contact 9-1-1. You deserve to feel safe and be accepted wherever you are. If you would like we can use or database of resources and try to find you a shelter that you can stay in until you are able to save up enough money.
If you feel comfortable you can give us a call and one of our trained liner will be happy to help you out.1-800-RUNAWAY

I talked to my close friend today, and he's helping me apply for jobs. I'm just waiting for them to reply.
I'm giving myself until the end of next week Friday to make my decision final.
I will contact 911 if it gets out of hand, and I will contact you if I need additional help.
