Hi i turn 18 in 10 days
Hello,
Thank you for writing to us here at the National Runaway Safeline.
We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. You do not deserve to be abused by your stepdad.
It is not your fault that he behaves this way towards you. It sounds like you are frustrated and tired of this treatment and would like to leave soon.
18 years old is generally the age that an individual may leave home without permission from their parent or legal guardian. We are not legal experts here but we can speak in general terms. If you are under 18 and leave home without permission, your parent/guardian may file a runaway report with the police.
On the other hand since you are so close to turning 18 the police could decide that they will not put out a runaway report.
You might consider contacting the non-emergency number of your local police department for information about the runaway laws in your state. Or you could ask if they would enter someone close to turning 18 in a matter of weeks as a runaway and force them to go home.
You can usually find the non-emergency number by searching online.
We would be glad to help you obtain this information but you would need to call in or sign into our live chat between 9am to 5pm. This normally the operating hours for non-emergency calls.
Our contact information is 1-800-Runaway (786-2929) or www.1800runaway.org
We look forward to hearing from you.
Take care,
NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
