    Re: tired of them

Thanks for getting back to us. It sounds like you are doing your best to make it through a really complicated and tough situation. Your safety and happiness is important to us and so we are glad that you have a place that you can stay, at least for a while, if you do choose to leave home. It also sounds like you know what the possible consequences might be for running away such as your parents listing you as a runaway and the police picking you up. Another thing you may want to consider is the chance that your boyfriend’s mom might get in trouble for “harboring a runaway” for letting you stay there.

Please feel free to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY to talk further about your situation. We would really like to be able to help you to the best of our ability through our crisis line.

    Best of luck,
    NRS

    Re: tired of them

Thanks for continuing to share with the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like you are pretty fed up with the situation and you really just want to get out of the house. It doesn’t seem like your parents are willing to give you permission to move in with your boyfriend though. What do you think their reasoning behind this is? Do you think it would be possible to compromise with them? For example, is there a family member or a family friend that you could live with? Or, how would they feel about you moving in with a friend they approved of?

If you are not able to compromise with your parents, what do you think you will do? From what you wrote, it seems like you might be thinking about running away soon since you don’t expect to live at home any longer. Deciding to leave home is a big decision and so we are glad that you are taking the time to think things over. Where are you planning on going? How might you survive? Who can you count on to help you? Will you be safe? If you end up in trouble, who will you call? What will happen in your relationship with your parents?

If you do decide to leave home, you might be interested in using our message service. We can deliver a message to your parents for you and your parents can leave a message with us to pass along to you. If you give us a message for your parents, we will call them and deliver it while keeping everything you told us confidential. For example, if we delivered a message to your parents we would still keep your location confidential. Another thing we can do is conference calling. We would only do this when and if you feel ready to talk with your parents. We could help you call them and we would stay on the line with you and your parents and help you talk things out. You can call us for help even if you aren’t ready to communicate with your parents. For example, if you find yourself in an unsafe situation or on the streets we can help you find a safe place to stay.

    Best of luck,
    NRS

    Re: tired of them

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like things are really tough for you at home right now so it is definitely understandable that you would want to get away from all the fighting. Can you tell us a little bit more about what it is like for you at home? You mentioned that you guys fight everyday. What are the fights usually about? Are there specific issues that you tend to disagree on?

From what you wrote it sounds like the situation has been escalating for a while. How long have things been like this at home? Could you tell us a little more about how you have been dealing with the situation and what you have tried so far? You definitely deserve to have a home that you feel welcome and comfortable in and we are here to talk with you about how you might be able to achieve that. What would have to change to make living at home more bearable?

We bring this up because it sounds like you are worried that if you left without permission your parents might report you as a runaway to the police. If your parents reported you as a runaway you are right in that the police would have the right to pick you up and bring you back home. How do you think your parents would react to this?

It sounds like you are very responsible for your age and you should feel proud of yourself for holding down a job and staying in school. That can be hard to do! You seem to be laying the ground work for being able to be self-sufficient once you are able to move out of your parent’s home. What are your plans are goals for the future?

Feel free to call us 1-800-RUNAWAY. We are here 24/7 and we are anonymous and confidential. We won’t tell you what to do, but we will be honest and realistic with you. There will always be someone here to talk with you about what is going on and help you come up with a plan that will help you reach your ultimate goals.

    Best of luck,
    -NRS

    tired of them

ok i just turned 18 today and i really want to move out of my parents house. But in the state of Nebraska i cant legally move out until im 19 without my parents permission. and they wont let me leave. i have a job and a place to live and im still going to school and i just cant take it anymore i really need to get out of there. im tired of fighting with my parents every day over nothing. thats all we ever do. i seriously cant remember one day that we have actually gotten along. im afraid that if i just up and leave and leave a note that they will call me in as a runaway and the cops will make me go home. i really dont know.
