  • my parent won't take me to therapy, what can i do?

keeping names, ages, and genders redacted for privacy.
so i am a minor. i am suffering from depersonalization (undiagnosed because my parent won't let me see a therapist.)i am homeschooled and my other parent isn't living with us (they are currently homeless) and can't take me to a therapist/counselor.
when i told them i thought i was depressed they just... well they made me write down my feelings (which i never did) and them never even did anything else because they "don't want me on pills for the rest of my life".

thus all started when they went through my diary (in which i said i was suicidal) and they just got mad. like it was an inconvenience for them that i wanted to die.

i don't think im depressed anymore but i know something's wrong. i feel floaty and like I'm not in control of myself. i want to talk to a professional but i can't talk to my parent that i live with about seeing someone. pleas help.

Thank you for reaching out to us and being so honest about what you are feeling. It sounds like you are experiencing some deep emotions. It’s good that you are aware that you aren’t feeling your best and want to talk to someone about it. It must be extremely frustrating to have your parents downplay the way you feel and then completely ignore it. Writing down your feelings is actually a good way to process what you are feeling and stop irrational thoughts. Since it seems like you are feeling detached from your emotions writing down what you are feeling in those moments or even the incidents when you feel most detached can pinpoint why you are feeling that way. That can be a good way to cope with everything until you can talk to a therapist. It’s good to have some ways to cope. Maybe even talking to friends, family members, religious organizations about what you are going through could help.

There are some resources you can utilize to talk to some when you are in a crisis or feeling suicidal. NAMI at 1800-950-NAMI is a good resource when you are in crisis and need someone to talk through some options with you. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1800-273-8255 is a good resource when you are having those days were you are feeling low and contemplating suicide. Both are some resources you can use until you can go to therapy. Also SAMHSA.gov is a website that has referrals for different therapist based on your location. We are not legal experts but depending on your age you can see what options some therapist may have, if you can pay a sliding scale fee (reduced cost). Some therapist can see you without your parents’ consent as young as 12years old but it depends on the state you are in. You can follow up with therapist in your area and inquire or have us do it for you if you want some support but you would have to call. If you have any more questions or want to talk more about your situation give us a call at 1800-RUNAWAY. Best of luck!
