  • I want to leave/run away.

I'm a 15 year old girl from California and I want to leave my house, and honestly never turn back. I don't feel like i'm a part of this family and don't think I can wait another 3 years to be able to leave. I cannot talk about this to my parents, I know there would not be a positive response. If i do leave, there's no way I can come back and face my parents. Neither of them care about me, my dad only sticks around and doesn't divorce so he doesn't have to pay child support. My mom is constantly yelling at me and telling me everything that is wrong with me. They are always fighting and yelling, if I try to cut in and tell them to stop my dad gets really close, yelling at me about how hes the adult and i'm the child so I need to stay out of it. I'm scared he's going to start physically hitting me soon. I don't feel safe in this house and don't feel wanted. It's always been like this in my house, I don't remember a time it hasn't been like this. I can't stay here any longer but I don't know where to go or how I could continue an education if that was even possible. I don't want to throw away my future by doing this either. What is your advice?

Re: I want to leave/run away.

    Hello,
Thanks for reaching out to us. It sounds like you have a lot going on with your family right now. We’re sorry to hear that your parents mistreat you and that you don’t feel safe at home. You deserve to have a safe place to live. We’re not here to give advice but we are here to provide resources should you not be able to stay at home any longer. Should you decide to do that, we can provide information about temporary shelters and we can also help you explore other options that you might find helpful. For example, you might consider talking to a family member or friend about alternative living arrangements. Or if you still feel unsafe, you might consider contacting Child Protective Services. You can find the number here: http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/res/pd...ergNumbers.pdf . Lastly, you might consider starting the process of emancipation which would make you a legal adult before the age of 18, however, each state has specific requirements you must meet before that can happen. If you need help talking through these options and coming up with a realistic plan for staying safe and continuing your education, you should call us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY any time. We look forwards to hearing from you soon and wish you the best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

            Hello,
We here at National Runaway Safeline have an extensive database of resources directed at homeless, runaway and at-risk youth. You’re more than welcome to the resources we have available, but we wouldn’t be able to post specific agencies or shelter contacts here on the website. For referrals, please contact us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or try our Live Chat here on the website.
            Thanks!
