  • 16M, can’t live in this house any longer

I’ve been living in this house my whole life but it’s starting to get too bad to live in for me now. It’s bad enough that anybody who isn’t used to it probably would have already considered the house a biohazard like 5 years ago. I posted some questions on Reddit and got some good advice, but I figured here I might have a better chance at getting more technical answers. Here are my questions:

1: I’m pretty sure I’d be removed from my house, but due to my age and that I know how to somewhat safely survive there as opposed to a 2 year old I’m not that sure. Our house is insanely bad and will probably be condemned if anybody sees it. We moved all of our furniture upstairs about 4 years ago and I’m the only one who ever goes downstairs to see how bad things are now. There’s a bad water leak downstairs that has to be at least half an inch high and gets worse every time I go down and see it. As a result of that, there’s black mold forming on all the walls down there. There’s also tons of old furniture and clutter piled up down there that makes it so only I can maneuver there whenever somebody needs something from there or if a pet gets down there (We have 5, and the stairway is fenced off). On the upstairs there is a ton of dog urine and feces, so much that the feces is cleaned up every couple weeks with a broom and dustpan. I could go on for hours about how bad the house is but I figured that’s enough. Do you think by reading that that I would be removed?

2: Do they search every square inch of the house and look at every little thing in it even after they see something bad enough to take a kid out of it? I wouldn’t really be the biggest fan of somebody searching through all of my drawers, in my closet, etc. plus I have no idea how they would get to the stuff downstairs.

3: Since the house is so bad, do you think they’d even let me go back in to get any of my stuff?

4: Could my mom be arrested or face anything legally besides me being taken away if they come?

5: I know this depends on the foster parent, but do foster parents generally give teens any internet access, let them listen to the music they want, etc? I have a guitar I’m sure I’d have to leave behind and music is the main thing that helps me cope with living here.

6: Is there any way from keeping my mom from knowing I’m the one who called? For multiple reasons

Those were my main questions, but any other info on what the process is like would be really helpful. I’m safe right now and don’t need anybody to call CPS for me, I will on my own time when I’m ready. Thanks in advance if anybody responds

    Hey there,

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing a little bit about what’s been going on, we know that it takes a lot of courage. It must be really hard to live in a home that's in such disarray. It sounds like the disrepair of your house may not be a safe environment and may qualify as neglect. Generally speaking, when a CPS report is made a caseworker will come out to the house to determine if it is a safe environment to live in and if they find that it isn't you may be removed from the home. As far as looking through things, every CPS caseworker is different and make take different approaches when determining safety so this can vary greatly. If you are removed from the home you may be placed with another family member, trusted friend, foster family, or in a youth group home. Each placement may have different rules regarding what you can and can't do (time you're allowed to use the internet, curfews, chores, etc.). We aren't legal experts here at NRS, but CPS is a separate entity from law enforcement but usually, criminal charges are not placed on a parent unless the caseworker finds that this would be warranted.

Abuse reports can be filed anonymously and can be filed by anyone - the name on the abuse report will not be shared with the party being investigated. If you feel like this is an option you want to explore, you may find this website helpful: https://www.childhelp.org/child-abuse/. You mentioned that you do not need anyone to contact CPS for you, but we can also help you to file a report if that’s the route you are considering and would like some assistance. If you’d like to go over what’s going on in depth, or if you’d like to explore other options that you may have available to you, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY. You can also chat us by clicking on the “CHAT” button on top of our homepage. We’re open 24/7 and here to listen and support you in any way we can.

Ok, thanks a lot for the response. If you see this do you think I have a good chance of being taken out? I know you can’t guarantee anything, but it would get worse if they came and did nothing
