  • Moving Across Country

Okay so, I'm 18. I am also a trans male. I plan on moving in January across the country to move in with my boyfriend, with the help of two friends.

My mother tends to be overprotective at times. She and step dad want me to be independent, such as driving and having a job, but also tend to limit me from that. I currently cannot drive but I'm working on it, and I've applied to different places seeking for a job.

I am very stressed at home, I am often insulted and given lots of physical work to do, my mental health is often ignored... I feel like Cinderella. I am guilted though often since we go to eat at times, and they claim they give me everything. I am not allowed to transition legally and medically, as both of my parents deny I am trans. I am misgendered and deadnamed on the daily, even though they know that's not who I am.

I do get money from helping my mom with her home business, but that's only 50 bucks a week and I do take art commissions.

I'm just.. I'm overwhelmed, I don't know how my mom is going to react, I don't know how to pack all my stuff (i have lots of trinkets). I'm scared in all honesty.

Thank you for reaching out to us. It can be really challenging to open up to anyone about what you are going through but you decided to and that is very brave. It seems like you have a lot of things going on at home. You have a lot of responsibilities and not a lot of support for everything that you are going through. A resource you can contact is Trans Lifeline at 1877-565-8860. They can offer some emotional, financial support to trans people in crisis.
It must be really hard not to feel supported by your parents and not been seen as the person you know and feel like you are. If you ever want to speak with someone about your mental health you can text NAMI at 741741.
Also if you want to do a conference call with your mom so that you can explain to her what your intending to do, we can assist with that. Telling your mom about your plan may alleviate some of the stress you are experiencing. It also will be a good idea to let someone know for safety reasons what your plans are since you are going across the country. It’s understandable that you are scared because that is a huge step, maybe if you talk it over with your friends and your parents you will feel better.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
