Re: 18 years old want to leave home after I graduate without parents permission
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline and sharing with us some of your story. It must be hard to have your dad yelling at you on a constant bases. We are so sorry to hear that home is not where you want to be. It sounds like dad’s yelling is starting to make you think that you want to move away in order to have the life that you want. That is understandable that you would want to leave. We are here to listen and support you in what ways we can.
You mentioned that you are 17, turning 18 soon, and are planning to graduate. Congratulations on your future graduation. That is an accomplishment. You are asking some really good questions, it sounds like you are trying to figure out what is best for you and trying to figure out how to make it happen. It sounds like you are wanting to leave after graduation once you turn 18. Here at NRS we are not legal experts, but we can speak in general terms. Generally, once you turn 18 you are an adult and no longer need parental permission. We understand you are planning on leaving after you turn 18, we just wanted to give you some general information if you felt you needed to leave before you are 18. Generally, you are not an adult until you turn 18. If you were wanting to leave before you turn 18 then your parents would have the option of filing a runaway report. Running away is not a criminal offense it is a status offense. This means it is not illegal for you to leave home at this age, just if you are found then they will bring you back to your parent’s. However, if you stay with someone while you are under the age of 18 or they have helped you, then that person could be charged with harboring a runaway which is a criminal offense for that individual. The severity of harboring a runaway varies from state to state.
It sounds like you have been thinking about this for a while and are starting to come up with a plan. Here at NRS we are not here to tell you what to, as you are the only one that can make this decision. Our only concern is that you are safe. Here are some things to think about
-If I leave where will I go?
- Is where I am going safe?
-what happens if things ever become unsafe?
-how will I survive? Food? Shelter? Money?
-do I have the paperwork needed to apply for jobs?
-who can I trust during this time?
-which friends can I rely on?
-what will happen if I can no longer rely on them for whatever reason?
-what do I think will happen if I have to go back to my parents’ house?
We hoped this helped and if you would like to continue talking about your situation you can always give us a call on our hotline or chat with us through our website. We look forward to hearing from you and we wish you the best of luck.
