  • 15 and in a confusing situation with leaving home.

So im currently 15, i turn 16 in 2 months, any who im trying to find information involving the situation im currently apart of, my parents are divorced but they have joint custody, im currently staying with my dad but i can go back to my mom if i choose to, the issue here is i want to leave home, ive lived on my own before and life was so much better for me i have a lot of past trama and i was forced to grow up quicker than most so i do well if i have the freedom to care for myself and the others around me meaning as in there emotional needs as well as health, my mom is telling me she is okay with me moving out and staying with someone else she has even told me that she would be fine with me becoming emancipated after my birthday but my dad on the other hand is not quite fond of this idea my parents dont speak but am i still legally able to leave home either now or after my birthday since i still have my mothers consent and she still has custody?

    Hello,
Thank you for writing to us here at the National Runaway Safeline.

We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. It sounds like you have one parent’s permission to leave but you are worried about your father challenging the decision. We are not legal experts but it might be of interest to you to speak with your mother and possibly a lawyer or legal aid center about this matter.

We want you to know that we are here as support to help you through this challenging time. We can best help by phone or chat as NRS is unable to respond more than twice by email or bulletin for assistance. If you would like to talk more in detail and share more about how we can help specifically, please call or chat soon.

Our contact information is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929); www.1800runaway.org (click on the chat button).
If you are at risk of any danger or feeling unsafe, we encourage you to reach out to or seek emergency assistance immediately.
We hope to hear from you soon.

    Take care,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
